Inquiry into Tiv/Jukun crisis kicks off in Benue

COMMISSION of Inquiry set up by the Benue State government to look into the crisis between Tiv and Jukun in Abinsi, Guma Local Government Area and Fidi in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State has been inaugurated.

Recall that sometimes in January 2019, the Tiv and Jukum were enmeshed in crisis at Abinsi, a development which resulted in the death of many as well as destruction of property.

Worried by the loss of lives and wanton destruction of property, the Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom constituted a panel of Inquiry to look into the immediate and remote cause of the conflict.

The Commission which is headed by Justice Wilfred Kpochi held its inaugural sitting yesterday at High Court 8, Makurdi

Justice Kpochi stated during the inauguration that the mandate of the Commission is to ensure the restoration of peace amongst the warring parties, urging the people to give the commission, maximum cooperation to succeed.

He said if at the course of proceedings, any party has misgivings, they should not hesitate to bring them forward, assuring that they will be adequately treated.

Counsel to Jukun nationality, Barr. Dogara Douglas Aboshi assured that he would not indulge in any from of frivolities to delay proceeding even as he raised concern of inadequate security at the court.

“There is need to deploy more security personnel since this is a commission set up as a result of fight between two tribes in which several lives were lost, property worth million destroyed and many have been rendered homeless”, Aboshi said.

He expressed confidence that justice will prevail at the end.

Counsel to the State Barr. Ejembi Enyikwola, on his part, said that the proceeding will commence by calling witnesses from the Jukuns.
