5 Early Steps Parents Take to Set Their Kids Up for Success

By Abigail Philip David

Parenting is a lifelong responsibility, and while there’s no formal university course on how to raise successful children, certain habits can shape their future.

After studying the childhood and upbringing of some of the most successful individuals, we identified key practices that parents can adopt to help their children thrive in today’s Nigerian society.

Here are five essential things parents can do early to set their kids on the path to success.

1. Teach Them to Do Chores

While having housemaids or domestic staff is common, children should still participate in household chores.

Doing chores instills self-discipline, responsibility, and independence—all essential traits for success. Encouraging kids to complete tasks like cleaning, organizing, and cooking builds a strong work ethic that will benefit them in adulthood.

2. Lead by Example with Good Morals

Children from peaceful and morally upright homes tend to have a higher chance of succeeding compared to those from chaotic or dysfunctional backgrounds.

Parents who demonstrate honesty, integrity, and kindness set a strong example for their children. By maintaining good morals, you not only shape your child’s character but also create a stable and supportive environment for their growth.

3. Take Education Seriously—For Yourself and Your Kids

Studies have shown that educated parents, especially mothers, are more likely to raise children who complete higher education.

If you want your children to prioritize learning, you must lead by example. Whether it’s reading books, taking professional courses, or encouraging academic excellence, your attitude toward education will influence their perspective on knowledge and personal growth.

4. Encourage Play and Creativity

Play is a crucial part of child development, and even organizations like UNICEF recognize its importance.

Beyond entertainment, playtime can be used to teach problem-solving skills, creativity, and social interaction. Whether it’s storytelling, role-playing, or building imaginative worlds, engaging in play helps children translate their ideas into reality, which fosters innovation and confidence.

5. Set Limits and Be Consistent with Discipline

Discipline is essential for teaching children self-control and responsible behavior.

Setting clear limits helps children understand boundaries, respect, and accountability. However, consistency is key—rules should be fair and enforced regularly to instill long-term values that will shape their character into adulthood.

Final Thoughts

Raising successful children isn’t just about providing them with education and resources—it’s about shaping their mindset, values, and habits from an early age.

By teaching responsibility, leading by example, valuing education, encouraging creativity, and enforcing discipline, parents can build a strong foundation that sets their children up for lifelong success.
