Protocols

I extend my warm regards to everyone present on this momentous occasion—the formal execution of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

This event marks a significant milestone in our journey toward strengthening consumer protection, particularly in the telecommunications industry. The collaboration we formalize today is the culmination of extensive engagement and commitment between our institutions.

The MoU highlights a shared vision to foster a transparent, competitive, and consumer-focused telecommunications sector, ensuring clarity and synergy for all stakeholders. By aligning our efforts, we aim to advance the Federal Government’s Ease of Doing Business agenda and address critical issues such as market abuses, consumer rights violations, and challenges in the digital economy.

I commend the FCCPC’s leadership for its dedication to consumer protection and healthy competition, which complements the NCC’s mission. My gratitude also goes to the teams from both institutions, whose hard work has made this partnership a reality.

Let us embrace this spirit of collaboration as we work together to achieve innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

Thank you.

Remarks by Dr. Tunji Bello, EVC/CEO, FCCPC

Protocols

I warmly welcome my esteemed colleague, Dr. Aminu Maida, and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) team to this historic event.

The principle of overlapping regulations ensures comprehensive oversight and consumer protection by allowing one agency to step in where the other may have limitations. Section 105 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018 underscores this synergy, requiring collaboration between the FCCPC and sector regulators.

This MoU represents a coordinated effort to eliminate regulatory gaps in the telecom industry, streamline operations for telecom operators, and protect consumers against exploitative practices. It aligns perfectly with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of economic growth through regulatory efficiency and prioritizing consumer welfare.

I commend Dr. Aminu Maida and his team for their partnership and dedication. I also urge other sector regulators to adopt similar frameworks with the FCCPC to extend these benefits to consumers across various industries.

Thank you for your attention, and welcome once again to the FCCPC.

Dr. Tunji Bello
