A truce meeting called by the Federal Government to resolve the ongoing strike by members of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics ended in a deadlock on Monday.

The meeting which lasted for five hours was presided over by the permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Education Sunny Echonu.

ASUP President Usman Dutse who came out from the meeting feeling unhappy, told reporters that the position of government regarding their demands were not pleasing to the lecturers.

He said government was proposing second week of January 2019 for the continuation of the meeting, a development that may not have gone down well with the striking polytechnic staff.

ASUP mobilised its members nationwide to resume strike on December 12, 2018, following what it described as governments failure to keep to agreements reached on ‘NEEDS’ assessment, earned academic allowances among other sundary issues.

Meanwhile the Academic Staff Union of Universities staged a walk out from the conciliation meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

ASUU President Biodun Ogunyemi however declined to comment on reasons for their walkout.

The meeting lasted for more than two hours at the Federal Ministry of Labour.

ASUU is equally prevailing on government to address infrastructural issues in the ivory towers, most of which were contained in the NEEDS assessment exercise conducted by previous administration.
