  • Midterm Scorecard: Reps Okon attracts N1.7B projects in two years

Midterm Scorecard: Reps Okon attracts N1.7B projects in two years

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi Uyo

More than N1.7bn with of projects have been attracted to the Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency by a member of the National Assembly Barr Ime Okon the last two years.

Okon who stated this during a mid-term media chat yesterday, said the amount was aside from assistance rendered to over 800 individuals with different cash and social needs.

Highlighting his legislative strides in his first two years, the lawnaker noted that he has sponsored or co-sponsored eight bills and motions, including, “a bill to establish the Metallurgical and Material Engineers and Scientist Registration Board of Nigeria.

Others include, “a bill to establish the Biomedical Engineers and Scientist Registration Board..Motions on the urgent rehabilitation of the Calabar-Itu-Ikot Ekpene Road, the disparity between HND and BSc holders in security agencies, and the need to decongest correctional centres, among others.”

Okon who is the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Inter-Governmental Affairs, said that in line with his constitutional duty of oversight functions, he actively participated in ten House Committees, including: Gas Resources, Healthcare Services, Host Communities, and Works, adding that he is also co-opted into three additional committees: Procurement, Basic Education, and Interior.

He however listed a wide range of infrastructure, empowerment, and welfare projects facilitated by his office and valued at over ₦1.7 billion, surpassing the ₦200 million project limit typically allocated to members as constituency project

Some of the completed and ongoing projects include, “construction of furnished 6 classroom block, Technical School, Ayadehe, and 4 classroom block with toilet facilities, PCN Primary School, North Itam, Itu LGA. Construction of 1.5km Joshua Uwah Street, including installation of solar-powered street lights and drainage system, in Mbak Itam III, Itu LGA

“Commissioning of an ultra-modern 450-capacity, Civic Centre in Idoro and ongoing construction of 1000-capacity Civic Centre in Nkwa, Ibiono Ibom LGA.”

Others include: Installation of solar-powered street lights in Ikot Obio Enang, Ikot Edok, Ikot Obio Enang, and Ikpa Ikot Ubo/Ikot Usen, Ibiono Ibom LGA and Itu LGA, provision of solar-powered boreholes, roads with drainage and lighting, and digital tools and educational support through bursaries to over 300 students, including 18 Law School students.

He also sponsored a Free Medical Outreach in Itu and Ibiono Ibom LGAs, donation of cars, scholarships to children of deceased political stakeholders, and medical and welfare support to over 800 constituents and facilitation of employment opportunities in federal and state agencies, including the UUTH, Nigeria Police Force, and Federal Fire Service.

He however corrected the widespread misconception surrounding the 2025 constituency project allocation, clarifying that while each constituency is now allotted ₦1 billion worth of projects, no cash is handed directly to lawmakers, even as all projects are executed by relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

“It is important that I correct a popular misconception which has gained traction across the country, members are alleged to have been given N1 billion cash each for Constituency projects in 2025 budget. There is no such thing; rather, each Federal Constituency is allotted Constituency projects to the tune of N1billion in the 2025 budget.

“The difference this time is that, the project total worth was increased to N1billion from N200million. Also, I must emphasize that; no member executes or administer projects. That is the duty of the various Ministries, Department and Agencies where the projects are domiciled”. He explained.

He revealed plans for a massive empowerment programme later in the year, targeting skills development and financial upliftment of constituents.

  • Prof Rufai Ahmed Alkali Calls for Calm Over Outcome of North East APC Stakeholders Meeting

Prof Rufai Ahmed Alkali Calls for Calm Over Outcome of North East APC Stakeholders Meeting

    By Mike Odiakose, Abuja

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Political Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Prof Rufai Ahmed Alkali, has called for calm over the outcome of APC North East Stakeholders meeting, cautioning against any divisive rank within the party.

The North East APC stakeholders meeting held in Gombe on Sunday, June 15, 2025 had ended abruptly over the controversy surrounding the absence of a formal endorsement of Vice President Kashim Shettima, alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Prof Alkali said that this is not the time for premature posturing or muscle-flexing.

According to him, “any divisive signals, particularly from within the ranks of our own party, risk undermining not just our legacy but the confidence of Nigerians who entrusted us with leadership.”

He emphasised that it is not unusual in a democracy to have differences of opinion but over the years the APC has weathered such challenges with dignity and brotherhood.

Part of the statement reads: “As a long-standing and committed member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), | feel compelled to appeal to all party stakeholders, leaders, and supporters — especially across the North East — to exercise caution, demonstrate political maturity, and remain focused on the unity and stability of our great party.

“It is not unusual, in a thriving democracy such as ours, for differences of opinion to emerge, especially as political momentum gradually builds toward the 2027 general elections.

“However, we must remember that the APC has, over the years, weathered similar moments with dignity and brotherhood — always putting party cohesion and national interest above ail other interests.

“Let it be clear: now is not the time for premature posturing or muscle-flexing. We are barely midway through the current administration, which is still focused on implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda. Our priority must remain consolidating the achievements recorded so far under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, particularly in securing our nation, reviving our economy, and restoring public confidence in governance.

“Any divisive signals, particularly from within the ranks of our own party, risk undermining not just our legacy but the confidence of Nigerians who entrusted us with leadership.

“The North East has played and continues to play a pivotal role in the APC’s success story. We must, therefore, rise above internal frictions and recommit ourselves to constructive dialogue, inclusive engagement, and party discipline.

“I call on all APC leaders — at the national, zonal, and state levels — to remain calm and focused. Let us guide our actions by wisdom, not emotion; by long-term vision, not short-term advantage.

“We owe this not only to our party but to the Nigerian people who look to us for stability, progress, and leadership.

“Let us close ranks, protect the integrity of the APC, and work together to ensure that the party continues to serve as a platform for national renewal and inclusive development.”

  • Group condemns report on new A’Ibom map

Group condemns report on new A’Ibom map

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi, Uyo

The Ulok Ulok Progressives Assembly, UUPA, the apex socio-cultural association for Ibeno ethnic nationality, has condemned a social media report on the controversial new map, dismantling the old boundaries around the coastal oil bearing communities of Akwa Ibom state.

The report titled; “Court Judgements, Historical Documents, Validate ‘Controversial’ Akwa Ibom Map Law” has drawn the ire of the elders, leaders and stakeholders of the Ibeno ethnic nationality, who described the report as as “a figment of the purveyors’ imagination and a ploy to intimidate the court which the matter is currently pending.”

The group, in a swift reaction on in Upenekang, called on the public to disregard the publication tended to divert attention of the people from the truth of the matter.

Secretary of Ibeno Clan Council, Chief Okon Udofia, on behalf of the group said, the failed re-mapping project was one of the wrong doings of former Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration.

“The aim was to reallocate the oil and gas resources belonging to other communities in the litoral local government areas of the State to his home LGA of Onna, in order to access host community benefits under the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021.” He noted

Chief Udofia noted that, the Court had earlier delivered judgement on the matter in favour of the Eastern Obolo ethnic nationality including Ibeno, even before the former governor hurriedly assented to the Bill.

He further explained that, the controversial remapping Law which was hurriedly enacted on the orders of the immediate past administration has continued to generate tensions and crisis in the affected LGAs.

According to him, “the former governor had sent the Executive Bill to the House of Assembly in 2023, seeking the House to enact a law creating a new map to address boundary issues in some oil communities around Mbo, Ibeno, Eastern Obolo, Mkpat Enin, Ikot Abasi and other local government areas, with the hope that the new map would diffuse tension and create a sense of belonging amongst the litoral LGAs”.

But rather than bring peace to the state, the Bill which was hurriedly passed by the House of Assembly and signed into law by the then governor, shortly before leaving office in 2023, according to him, has led to perennial ethnic killings amongst the litoral local government areas of Eastern Obolo, Ikot Abasi, Ibeno, Eket and Esit Eket LGAs, as the contenders argued the mutilated original boundaries in the state High Court.

However, the failed re-mapping project had generated mixed reactions from the people. While a few supported it, majority of the state’s stakeholders have opposed the idea, saying, “it will breed disunity and confrontation amongst the people of the coastal areas.”

The Paramount Ruler of Eket, Edidem ECD Abia; the apex socio-cultural organisation – Ekid People’s Union, EPU, led by the President- General (PG), Dr. Samuel Udonsak are in support of the new map, arguing that the state never had a map.

But, stakeholders from the oil – rich Ibeno ethnic nationality and their Obolos, and the Ijaw kinsmen in Mbo and Eastern Obolo LGAs, have kicked against the unilateral decision to remap their boundaries, describing the action as “illegal and politically – motivated, rather than necessity.”

For a lasting peace, Chief Udofia, appealed to the governor, Pastor Umo Eno, to use his good offices to address the boundary anomalies to stop further bloodshed around the oil and gas host communities.

He queried the motive behind the creation of a new map, “when Akwa Ibom, as a political entity created by an Act of Parliament, already had a map with the boundary lines of all the LGAs specifically drawn.”

He added that, only political intervention would address the issues in dispute and avert further skirmishes and bloodshed witnessed since the launch of the controversial map.

“We are calling on the governor to withdraw the new map and revert to the old order because more deaths and destruction are looming in the coastal communities.

“The former governor never consulted the people through community engagements before taking the decision to muddle up the boundaries and putting a knife to the values of good neigbouliness as different ethnic nationalities in the same coastal plane.

“The major reason behind the wanton killings and destruction of our ecosystems by the infamous boundary adjustments could be located in the mischievous ploy by the former governor to connect his Onna LGA to the Atlantic because of the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA, so as to enable his community to access the 3 percent derivation appropriation to litoral LGAs.

“Now, the question is, do states have overriding powers to legislate and alter existing boundaries without recourse the federal laws?

“The matter is currently in Court and the recent sitting has given us cause the justice would served rightly for such impunity to be put to rest.

“That is why we took the matter to court on realization, because the issue is part of the problems we are having now with our Ekid neighbours, who are cashing in on the boundary politics to attempt a take over of our lands at Ndito Eka Iba village in Ibeno East, which they try to rename Okoiyak Ekid, Eket Local Government.

Okon further stated that, “it does not lie within the purview of the State Government to create Local Government Areas boundaries. Before the purported re – mapping, the people of Eastern Obolo LGA, during the period of the House of Assembly public hearing had taken the state government to Court and won.”

“The court judgment then clearly stated that, the State or House of Assembly have no right to entertain or do anything concerning the boundaries between one LGA and another; that, it is exclusively the responsibility of the federal government under the Attorney General/Minister of Justice and the Surveyor – General of the Federation.

“So, with the judgment, the State Government definitely has no authority to carry out the mapping or re – mapping of any Local Government Area boundaries.”
He therefore advised those behind the illegal re mapping project to focus on the case in court and stop the propaganda.

  • President Tinubu commissions Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, built by CGC

President Tinubu commissions Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, built by CGC

President Bola Tinubu on Monday commissioned the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6, pledging his administration’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure that directly improves citizens’ lives.

During the commissioning ceremony on Airport Road, Abuja, President Tinubu led a moment of silence in honour of the victims of recent violence in Benue State and extended his heartfelt condolences to the affected families and communities.

“While I sympathise with the people of Benue, I’ve spoken to the governor. The leadership of Benue should accept our condolences and try hard—very consciously—to maintain peace and harmony among themselves. We are a huge family living in the same house, staying in different rooms, but living together in harmony,” he said.

President Tinubu announced plans to visit Benue State on Wednesday to commiserate with the victims and their families.

He described the water network as a transformative effort to guarantee safe, sustainable, and sufficient water for homes, institutions, and communities across the capital city.

“Water is life. It is not a luxury. It is a basic human right and a foundation for public health, urban development, and economic growth,” he said.

He lauded the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), led by Minister Nyesom Wike, and all project stakeholders for their dedication to the project.

He emphasised that the Renewed Hope Agenda focuses on delivering tangible, people-centred projects that impact Nigerians’ daily lives.

“This water infrastructure is not only a technical milestone, but a moral one, because it is about equity. It ensures that no part of Abuja is left behind in our national development agenda.

“When we speak of the Renewed Hope Agenda, we mean tangible, people-focused projects that improve the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians. Water to drink, to clean, to grow, to build. That is a real project. It’s a treasure that we always take for granted.”

“We are not here today merely to lay the pipes. We are laying the groundwork for healthier families, stronger communities, and a more productive city,” he stated.

President Tinubu thanked the international development partners, especially the Chinese Government and CGC Nigeria Limited, for their collaboration on the project.

“We are showing the world that partnership built on mutual respect and shared prosperity can deliver real impact,” he said.

The President urged residents to safeguard the infrastructure: “As we commission this vital project, I urge all residents and stakeholders to protect this investment. Use the water wisely and work with the government to ensure sustainability.”

Wike thanked the President for his continued support and practical interest in developing the capital city.

“Mr. President, on behalf of the residents and administration of the FCT, we sincerely appreciate and thank you for taking the time to be with us again. Today marks the fourth day of the commissioning programs,” Wike said.

He recounted the President’s early inquiries into Abuja’s infrastructure state after assuming office.

“I recall that when you came on board, you invited me and asked me one or two questions. One is, ‘Why is the mass transit train not working?’ You said, ‘I want to ride on that train.’

“Secondly, you asked, ‘What is happening to the Abuja water supply?’ and you made it clear: ‘It’s not only rail infrastructure. We want the train to work and the water supplied to the city.”

Wike explained that the project was initially awarded in 2017 for $470 million under a tripartite financing arrangement involving the Chinese Government (85%), the Federal Government, and the FCT Administration (15%).

He also highlighted ongoing efforts to extend water infrastructure to underserved communities.

“Last year, when you (Mr President) visited China—luckily for us, I was part of the delegation—the FCT also signed an agreement with CGC to provide water to rural areas. We are almost done with procurement to give water to Bwari, Kuje, Karu, and other communities. So we are not only providing water to the city but also to the satellite towns.”

He assured the President that future rural water projects will be delivered swiftly.

“It will not take years like this one. We believe that by next year, during your third anniversary, we’ll commission those satellite town projects where you provide water.”

Wike also praised the National Assembly for their support.

“Every day, we’ll make sure that people will see- those who want to see and those who don’t want to see. It’s not your fault—because they decided not to see.”

Providing a technical overview of the project, Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda said the new loops are designed to serve 50 districts across Phases Two, Three, and Four, including the FCT’s northern and southern development corridors.
