Bobrisky Completed Jail Term, Did Not Stay Outside Prison – FG Panel

[By Abigail Philip David]

An investigative panel set up by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has confirmed that popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, served his full jail term in a custodial center.

Bobrisky was sentenced to six months imprisonment on April 12, 2024, for abusing the naira and was released in August 2024.

Controversial social critic Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, had previously shared a voice note allegedly from Bobrisky, claiming she paid N15 million to some Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials to drop money laundering charges. In the audio, Bobrisky further claimed that a “godfather” and the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, arranged for her to serve her sentence in a private apartment rather than in prison.

On September 30, Minister Tunji-Ojo established an investigative panel, led by Permanent Secretary Magdalena Ajani, to probe these allegations and other possible violations involving the Nigerian Correctional Service.

On Monday, during the reading of the panel’s phase one report, Uju Agomoh, a member of the panel and Executive Director of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action, stated that no evidence supported the claim that Bobrisky stayed outside the prison during her sentence.

“The panel did not find any evidence suggesting that Mr. Okuneye slept outside the custodial center from April 12, 2024, to August 5, 2024,” Agomoh said, noting that Bobrisky served the six-month sentence with the usual remission applied.

Further details of the investigation are expected as the panel continues its work.
