  • What Does Soda Do to Your Body? 7 Reasons to Kick the Habit

What Does Soda Do to Your Body? 7 Reasons to Kick the Habit

What does soda do to your body? The answer may surprise you. If weight loss hasn’t motivated you to ditch sodas, these 7 major health problems should!

What does soda do to your body? If you drank two cans of soda per day, you would gain approximately one pound every two weeks, or about 26 pounds total in one year.

While the debate rages on about whether or not sodas should be banned in schools and major cities, one thing is for certain: Each individual can make a personal choice to limit or quit drinking sodas altogether. What about you? Are you ready to kick the colas and discover how to quit drinking soda for good? If you do drink soda, what does soda do to your body?

Let us give you some incentive: Did you know that if you drank two cans of soda per day, you would gain approximately one pound every two weeks or about 26 pounds total in a year?[1] If this doesn’t motivate you to surrender your soda habit, we have an additional seven reasons to quit—and some of them may surprise you.

So, what does soda do to your body? It’s linked to at least seven serious diseases, including heart disease. See our list below.

    1. Liver Disease

Drinking soda causes fat build up around the organs by as much as 25 percent and almost doubles the amount of fat around the liver. This type of fat, called ectopic fat, is thought to be more dangerous to metabolic health than subcutaneous fat, the kind that collects under the skin. Ectopic fat induces dysfunction of the organs involved. And, when the liver is surrounded by fat, the risk of liver disease skyrockets.

    2. Heart Disease

Drinking soda raises LDL “bad” cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, and blood pressure. Furthermore, the increased consumption of sugar in sodas increases body weight, which in turn causes the liver to produce even more cholesterol. Even as little as one soda per day increases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome by as much as 50 percent—and that includes diet sodas, too!

Metabolic syndrome is a condition that includes three of five criteria: large waistline, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high triglycerides, or low HDL “good” cholesterol levels.

    3. Stroke

One study found that drinking one serving of soda was associated with a 10 percent increase in stroke risk.

    4. Diabetes

Researchers have found new evidence that soft drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may contribute to the development of diabetes, particularly in children.

    5. Kidney Stones and Kidney Disease

Sodas contain high levels of phosphoric acid and high fructose corn syrup, which have been linked to kidney stones and kidney disease.

    6. Pancreatic Cancer

Drinking as little as two soft drinks per week nearly doubles to risk of getting pancreatic cancer.[7]. As noted in our post “Pancreatic Cancer Causes: What You Can Do to Reduce Your Risk“: “In the vast majority of people it touches—rich or poor, famous or anonymous—pancreatic cancer causes death. In fact, while mortality rates for many other cancers are declining, deaths from pancreatic cancer are on the rise.”

    7. Osteoporosis and Increased Risk of Fracture

Drinking sodas has an adverse effect on bone mineral density—especially in women—due to the phosphoric acid content.

    What About Diet Soda?

Despite its deceiving label as a “diet” beverage, diet soda is not a healthy alternative to regular soda. In fact, a growing body of research shows drinks with artificial sweeteners—like diet sodas—are associated with increased weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease.

  • 3 Signs that tell you are a toxic coworker

3 Signs that tell you are a toxic coworker

According to the Harvard Business School a toxic worker is someone who engages in behavior that is harmful to an organization’s property and people.

Definitely you wouldn’t want to have to deal with a toxic coworker, but have you assessed your attitude to your coworkers?

Well, here are 3 signs that tell of a toxic coworker:

    1. Being judgmental

Being judgmental makes you feel you’re better than everyone else.
Are you quick at judging others and look down on them when they make mistakes? If you always look for faults in everything your colleague do, you’ve got to fix that behavior by being less judgy and more helpful. Don’t just go to them to identify mistakes in what they do, and when you see a mistake in their work, politely offer to help, don’t roll your eyes feeling you know it all. Trust me, nobody likes to be given that I-too-know attitude.

    2. Gossiping

No one likes to be tagged a gossip especially in the workplace. But when you get fond of spreading hearsay about your colleague, you’ll become that toxic co-worker nobody wants to associate with.

When a colleague provokes you, call him/her and have a conversation with the person directly. Don’t go on to discuss what the co-worker do to you to another staff member to make that person look bad.

    3. Selfishness

Toxic people are selfish and only think about circumstances they can benefit from. If as a staff member of an organization you always consider yourself first regardless of what happens to others, your colleagues would definitely find you toxic.

Have empathy for others. Don’t manage to use anything just for others to come and fix it. If you can fix it, do. If you can’t report the situation to whoever is in charge.

  • El-Zakzaky and wife returns from India, arrives in Abuja

El-Zakzaky and wife returns from India, arrives in Abuja

Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), who left Nigeria on Monday, for medical treatment in India, returned to Nigeria on Friday.

The IMN leader, along with his wife, Zeenat, arrived via an Ehiopian Airline aircraft with registration number ET911, which landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at exactly 11.41 a.m.

An airport official, who pleaded anonymity, told anxious journalists at the new arrival terminal of the airport that El-Zakzaky had “passed through an alternative arrival terminal”.

“The man (El-Zakzaky), has arrived; he passed through another arrival terminal”, the official told newsmen..

The cleric, who is facing an 8-count charge of homicide in a case filed by the Kaduna State Government, was granted leave for medical treatment by a Kaduna High Court on Aug. 5.

El-Zakzaky and  his wife subsequently travelled to India via Duba, for medical treatment after the Federal Government and relevant agencies took steps to comply with the order in spite of protestation by Kaduna State Government.

However, the Federal Government in a statement on Wednesday  said that the religious leader was frustrating the authorities of the Indian hospital where he was to be treated.

In the statement,  “The true story on El-Zakzaky in India”, the government said that the cleric, who particularly chose Medanta Hospital, India for the treatment, had begun to display ulterior motives against laid down procedures.

The statement signed by Grace Isu Gekpe, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, said that the cleric refused to subject himself to preliminary medical checks after State officials resisted his pressure to hand over his International Passport to him.

“He also demanded free movement and access to visitors of all kinds, and also requested to be allowed to check into a 5-Star Hotel instead of being admitted in the hospital.

“That request was rejected on the ground that he came into the country for medicals, and not as a tourist, especially with the Visa issued on medical grounds and not for tourism.

“He also demanded that Police protection be withdrawn from him by the Indian authorities.

“Against medical ethics and standard practice, he requested to nominate Doctors of his choice to join the ones tasked by Medanta Hospital to perform medical treatment on him and his wife.

“That demand created a stalemate as the Hospital insisted that he would not dictate to it on the choice of medical personnel to carry the required medical treatment.

“Frustrated by his antics, the Indian authorities have expressed willingness to return him to Nigeria with immediate effect. This is on the account that they will not allow him use their country to internationalise his group’s activities.

“The Nigerian government commended the stand of the Indian Government and also apologise to her for the “unruly behaviour” of El-Zakzaky.

The statement affirmed government’s readiness to prosecute El-Zakzaky through due process, if and when he is returned to the country, urging Nigerians to ignore his claims that he was being held in circumstances worse than he was in Nigeria.

  • 12 Money tips for bachelors

    12 Money tips for bachelors

Being a man means you have to own up to responsibilities that involves family, friends and yourself. How you manage your finances also speaks volumes about the kind of man you are.

So, here are 12 money tips for single men.

    1. Set smart goals

It is so easy when you are young and single to be “foot loose and fancy-free.” The truth is that without a plan, you are going nowhere, rather like a ship without a rudder. Look at your life; how do you want it to be? It takes focus, effort and a plan to make those big dreams come true.

    2. Live on a budget

Budgeting sounds boring, but a budget is an invaluable tool that helps you prioritize your spending and manage your money no matter how much or how little you have. Can you account for where your money goes? Are you spending all that you earn, and more? The truth is that if you stick to a budget and redirect part of your income to long-term financial goals you will have financial freedom before long.

Do you have to eat out every single day? Learning to cook is a great money-saving skill. Have your mother teach you! The costs of eating out might seem affordable, but it really adds up to much.

    3. Start to save

Saving as a single man is easier said than done. Social expectations tend to be to spend excessively to keep up. Without being disciplined and focusing on your own goals as opposed to what society expects, it is easy to get lost in a cycle of debt and end up broke.

Those that start saving in their 20s and 30s have a great opportunity to achieve early financial security. Automate your savings and try to save at least 20% of your income. Set aside enough money in an Emergency Fund to pay for at least 6 to 12 months of your expenses in an easy access savings or money market account or fund.

    4. Don’t let debt consume you

We all have to borrow from time to time. But if you borrow, plan to pay back. Particularly when you are young and starting out it might be difficult to get a loan from your bank. The primary source of credit will tend to be family and friends. Many people abuse this opportunity. Don’t be that friend who doesn’t pay back loans.

Credit can be a powerful tool that can help you to create wealth. It can also be devastating to your finances. Use credit judiciously and mainly for things that should appreciate in value and add value to your life; property, education e.t.c.

    5. Where will you live?

One of the largest costs of living is housing. Even though it might seem somewhat undignified to continue to live at home, it makes sense as you build your independence and save towards your own accommodation. Rather than rent alone, consider sharing an apartment with roommates. Splitting costs between two or three people can save you huge sums each year.

Transport costs can be another bummer. Explore opportunities for car pooling, remote working etc. that can significantly reduce your transport costs.

    6. Talk about money early

The choice of a life partner is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. You need to get this right; it has huge implications for your attaining your full potential. When you are in a serious relationship, money talk doesn’t have to wait for marriage. Money conversations should start before you walk down the aisle, and then continue as your relationship evolves; and your lives and finances change.

Paying attention to how someone manages their money will give you some insights as to what kind of money personality they have, and if this is what you wish to move forward with for the rest of your life. Lookout for those opportunities that come from time to time, when you are dating.

Be observant; perhaps she insists that you pay for her designer bags on your meager salary, or insists on eating out everyday. Perhaps you are forced to pay for her aso-ebi every weekend. If this is an issue for you, look for a partner that believes in you and your prospects and is not overly impressed by short-term excesses and outward appearances.

    7. Club life

Naturally for a young single man, it’s fun to socialize with friends every evening at the club or bar, but just imagine what you can save if you cut back on going out with the boys to bars, restaurants, night clubs etc. You have the cash, and you want to flaunt it. But regularly running up huge bar tabs, and always buying the latest gadget without considering your income and expenses, will eventually make you broke. Skip a few perhaps, and invite friends over with each person bringing something. If home is not a place that you can confidently entertain in, there are cheap options such as the beach for lots of fun if everyone contributes.

    8. Invest in yourself

You are your greatest asset. Investing in yourself is the best thing you can do. Each of us has unique gifts, marketable skills or talents. Discover yourself. What are you passionate about? What are you exceptionally good at? It is your responsibility to identify, cultivate, nurture and use your talent. Tap into the potential for these effortless skills to earn income.

    9. Take care of your health

Health is wealth; the choices that you make today regarding how you treat your body from now, can have a significant impact on your future health and financial security. Be careful of some the pressures of the excesses of your generation: cigarettes, alcohol, prescription drugs, hard drugs, unprotected sex etc.

    10. Invest for the future

It may seem absurd to talk about retirement when you are young and starting out. Even though the future seems so far away now, if you save and invest when you are young, you have an exciting opportunity to build significant wealth. It is tempting to take huge risk. Overconfident and inexperienced young investors sometimes approach investing much like gambling and often get caught out in scams.

Invest rather than speculate; carefully consider the risk and create a diversified investment portfolio that includes cash, bonds, mutual funds, stocks, real estate and business interests. Get on that property ladder as early as possible.

    11. Protect your assets with insurance

Do you have adequate insurance in place for your car, home, health, or your life? As an adult, you are responsible for protecting yourself and your possessions. Don’t wait for an accident, a fire, a flood or a serious illness before you realize the importance of considering insurance.

    12. Mind the company that you keep

“It is better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior are better than yours and you’ll drift in that direction”. – Warren Buffett.

The saying that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with is scary but true.

Now is the time to establish the foundation for your financial future. You are young and have the advantage of time. Don’t waste it. Seek professional advice and remember that you are in the right place at the right time.
