  • THE TRAGEDY CALLED IMO STATE by Emeka Ihedioha.

I have restrained myself from writing about Imo State, the Eastern Heartland, and my beloved fatherland because of a vicious anger that refused to go away. Each time I remembered my ancestral home in the last four years, the same volume of anger flooded my spirit. My soul refused to be healed.

I restrained myself from writing because of the golden law of communication – do not speak when angry.

I was angry for two reasons. First I was angry with the Northern Islamic Oligarchy and her Feudal Lords who exploited the weakness of the Nigerian State and the gullibility of her institutions to manipulate and manufacture the tragedy that is Imo today, just to fulfill the feudal dreams of the Grand Madhi.

The last Northern Madhi, Muhamadu Buhari was determined to fulfill the territorial dream of the Grand Madhi, Sultan Usman Dan Fodio, to overrun Nigeria with militant lslam and dip the Quran in the sea, a dream the British interrupted with their emergence on the Nigerian scene and their conquest of the Sokoto Caliphate in 1903.

That dream remained the driving force of the Northern political establishment and was resumed by all means after the British left.

That dream consumes popular leaders among the kafirs and throws up unpopular compromised compliant leaders among them who will be ready to take dictations from the new Madhi.

That dream consumed Awolowo and sent him to Calabar prison, imposed unpopular leaders on the then Western Region and triggered off “Operation Wetie,” the singular evil that led to January 15 coup by Chukwuma Nzeogwu, the July 29 retaliatory coup by Muritala Mohammed, the Igbo pogroms and to Biafra.

On January 14 2020, a day prior to the celebrated January 15 coup, Muhammadu Buhari unleashed his own brand of judicial coup in Imo State. With only three years to go, Madhi Buhari turned his dreamy eyes to the Eastern Heartland. On that fateful January 14, employing an already weakened Supreme Court, with a younger Madhi in the stable, Buhari turned justice on its head, discarded the sovereign will of Imo people and imposed a compromised compliant leader on the State.

The dream paid off in full – in four years of the impostor’s government, thousands of Imo youths have been ‘converted’ to Islam through government patronage and were sponsored to pilgrimage to Mecca with government funds.

We are likely going to have more Alhajis in Imo State alone than in all the Northern states put together. This is at the expense of peace, and with a high cost in blood and terror.

Unabated evil has ravaged the state and walked naked on her streets as a result of that abrasive injustice occasioned by Buhari’s judicial coup.

The anger of a state sponsored terror in my homeland has refused to go away. It is an ongoing bloody coup, more bloody than any coup that ever happened in Nigeria.

The second reason for my unabated anger was on the treacherous sellout and greedy nuances of the Imo political elite as well as the docility of the Imo populace. Less than one month after Buhari’s coup in lmo, the whole political class began a gullible dance of solidarity for the impostors. There was no single resistance.

In the twinkling of an eye all the PDP law makers who were in the majority, including the Speaker became politically compliant, joined the conqueror’s party without quams and ditched the man elected together with them by the people.

The people were no different. A collective amnesia descended on the land. A people must get the leaders they deserve, leaders must become the government of the people. In the final analysis, Imo people simply got the government they deserved.

In 1965 the Yoruba nation, who the Igbo often derogate as cowards rose in solidarity with their true leaders and resisted the imposition of leaders by the Northern oligarchy. Nigeria changed the next year.

In 1983, the people of Ondo State rose in solidarity with their chosen leaders and resisted the imposition of an Omoboriowo on them by the same Northern establishment. Three months later, Nigeria changed again. A people must indeed get the leadership they deserve.

The Imo tragedy further revealed to me a recurring trajectory of my people, something l have discovered from experience – “You don’t fight an Igbo war, you fight your war.”

Igbo war ended with Biafra. From then till now, it is your war and your war alone. It has become ‘every Igbo for himself and God for us all. Anyone going into any battle who is counting on Igbo collective resistance is wasting his time. Such discovery has made me angry, very angry.

In 1999 we found ourselves embroiled in a war of survival as Igbo speaking Anglican worshippers in Lagos Diocese. The diocese had come up with an obnoxious law, abrogating the use of Igbo language in all Igbo speaking congregations in Lagos.

Being in the vanguard of Igbo evangelism in Lagos, and having single handedly established six thriving Igbo speaking congregations within a space of two years, I became the main target of that war.

The “Igbo Anglicans in Lagos” formed in the exigency of the existential trauma of the moment became the vanguard of that war.

At the inception of the religious war, the then Primate of the Church of Nigeria and Bishop of Lagos, His Grace, the Most Rev’d J.A Adetiloye described it as “nothing but a storm in a tea cup.” He understood the psychology of the Igbo very well.

It was exactly as he predicted. The Igbo resistance was without depth and without content. The storm faded as soon as it started with many Igbo casualties littering the religious space in Lagos.

Today, as Imo people go to the polls, I refuse to have any expectations and so refuse to be disappointed. I am still angry. I have no faith in the Imo government, I have no faith in the electoral umpire, I have no faith in the judicial system, l have no faith in Imo political elite, and above all I have no faith in the Imo people. I expect nothing, and so save myself the agony of any disappointment

If at all there is anything to expect, it is the
certainty that the next electoral robbery will be swallowed by all, hook, line and sinker. And the tragedy goes on!

  • I’d Have Relocated My Mother From Bayelsa To Abuja If Diri Had Lost Governorship Election, Says Ex-President Jonathan

    *

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday said he would have moved his mother out of Bayelsa State to the nation’s capital, Abuja, if another candidate other than Governor Douye Diri had emerged winner of last Saturday’s off-cycle election.

Governor Diri defeated Timipire Sylva, his All Progressives Congress (APC) rival, to secure a second term in office.

President Jonathan, who spoke when he paid a congratulatory visit to Diri in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, said insecurity would have been worse if the Governor had lost.

“We don’t want to go into unnecessary crisis in the State. Results have been declared and we believe the election was conducted.

We believe the Governor won the election and we plead that people should accept it and work with the Governor. Let all of us support him so that the state will move ahead.

“There should be nothing that will push the State backward. We should think about the development of the State starting from the issue of peace and security in the State which within this last period, three years plus, there are significant improvements in terms of cultism and kidnapping and so on and so forth.

“I was saying before this election that if Diri loses this election, I would have relocated my mother to Abuja.”

Recounting how his cousin was kidnapped and killed, Jonathan expressed optimism that with Diri returning as the Governor of the State, such insecurity would soon be a thing of the past.

“My cousin was kidnapped two times. On one of those occasions, one of my cousins, Solo, was killed because they threw him into the river and he didn’t know how to swim.

“So, we’ve passed through hell in this State and we’ve seen a little light at the end of the tunnel. So, people should calm down, and allow Diri to focus on governance so that he will be able to propel this State forward so that we will benefit as citizens of the State,” he said.

Sylva had succeed Jonathan as Governor of Bayelsa in 2007 when the ex-President was elected Vice-President

  • Only United front can produce Kogi governor- Bello

    Olu Samuel, Lokoja

The Kogi state Governor, Alhaji Yayaha Bello has said that the outcome of the just concluded Governoship election has confirmed that only one section of the state cannot produce the governor, rather the three tribes must unite to produce the governor.

The governor who spoke on Saturday at a stake holders meeting of the All Progressive Congress,APC held at the Glasshouse of the government house,Lokoja said that the results of the election and subsequent emergence of Ahmed Usman Ododo was a clear indication that the unity he had been preaching in the last seven years has yeilded positive results.

He thanked God and President Bola Tinubu for the support which gave birth to the victory of the All Progressives Congress in the November 11 governorship election, stressing that the party and its candidate, Usman Ododo “won the election clean and clear.”

He noted that it was pertinent to review and evaluate the election, which APC won overwhelmingly, for people to learn from the mistakes and avoid the pitfalls of the past in future exercises.

“The journey was full of ups and downs in the last seven years. But we thank God for the resounding victory. With all the obstacles before, during and after the election, the APC came out stronger.

“The time for everybody to carry his cross has come. Everybody will bear his father’s name because there is still a future,” he said.

While maintaining that Kogi State must develop as one united state, he pointed out that under no illusion must any tribe think they could vote for themselves and become Governor without the support of other tribes.

According to the Governor, the November 11 governorship election has shown that unity is the watchword.

“In 2019, I won without ethnic agenda. I cautioned against tribal sentiments and asked that we desist from it before the election. I was optimistic that the APC would win the November 11 Governorship election. I wanted it to be a sweet victory, reason I cautioned against sentiments,” he added.

Governor Bello, however, said people allowed emotions, personal and parochial interests to becloud their sense of reasoning, but noted that the level of good governance provided by the present administration in the areas of road construction, health care and infrastructure development was enough for the APC to win overwhelmingly.

Governor Bello described the Igala nation as good people, saying, “The Igala nation are not tribalistic or racist. They are good people but majority are being misled by poor representation.”

Governor Bello assured the people of Kogi West that payback time would soon come and called on leaders to educate their people and be selfless.

“Those who could not work for victory should break away from sentiments and work for a united Kogi State in the future,” he said.

Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, thanked the people of Kogi West for standing strong, despite three Okun sons being in the contest.

The Kogi State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Bello, in his remarks appreciated the APC faithful for fighting very hard to victory, while assuring members that the party would do a review of the whole process to determine those who betrayed the APC.

  • Imo Guber: Ihedioha denies making comments over election result, blames mischief makers

    By Obinna Nwachukwu

The attention of the Media Office of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON, has been drawn to a mischievous story trending in the social media wherein an article entitled “The Tragedy Called Imo State” is being attributed to him. The piece of balderdash sent out in his name purports that he is angry with what the authors of the article called “Northern Islamic Oligarchy” for removing him as the governor of Imo State. The forgers of the piece of cant also claim that he is angry with the Imo political elite and the generality of the people of Imo State for their docile response to the Supreme Court judgment of January 14, 2020, among other infantile attributions.

We state here, for the avoidance of doubt, and for the records, that the article in question was not written by His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha.

The opinions and sentiments expressed therein are not his. Instead, they are the products of the putrid imagination of its purveyors. Associating him with the poisonous views expressed in that fairy tale is not only cheap and disingenuous, it is mischief writ large.

As a Nigerian citizen who has had the privilege of holding leadership positions in the political space, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha has not and can never descend into guttersnipes. He understands the meaning and value of good breeding. He is therefore not one to shoot irresponsibly into the public space.

It is evident from the timing of this blackmail that the mischief-makers set out to exploit and cash in on the outcome of the just concluded governorship election in Imo State. The figment of their imagination must have led them astray, making them to believe, as they do, that Rt. Hon. Ihedioha has an axe to grind with the election and its outcome. This poor reasoning can only emanate from tainted minds scavenging desperately for mischief. But they got it all wrong.

It is on record that His Excellency Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha has never made any inflammatory or incendiary remark since he was removed as the governor of Imo State. His dignified silence is for a reason. He is a firm believer in constitutionality and the rule of law. He detests self-help. That was why he never went outside the purview of the law in his quest for justice and people-centered democratic order.

It should be pointed out as well that the attempt to portray him as someone who harbours anti-northern and anti-Islamic sentiments is an act of bad faith. It is intended to put him on collision course with the northern political and religious establishment. But the mischief has failed disastrously.

In his political journey over the years, Rt. Hon. Ihedioha has had a healthy association with Nigerians of various religious and political shades. At no time has he been associated with bigotry of any sort. Seeking to impose one on him smacks of bad blood on the part of its promoters. Nigerians who have associated with him both at national and sub national levels can attest to his centripetal disposition to national issues.

We therefore call on well meaning Nigerians as well as men and women of goodwill the world over to disregard the piece of blackmail being woven around him. Rt. Hon. Ihedioha never authored or authorized to be authored any article in the mound of that being imposed on him by agents of mischief. The purveyors of the blackmail should be seen for who they are- loathsome mischief makers.

  • A’Ibom Electoral Commission Boss denies being a PDP member

A’Ibom Electoral Commission Boss denies being a PDP member

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi,Uyo

Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak has denied has debied allegations of affiliation with the Peoples Democratic Party before and after his appointment as Resident Electoral Commissioner,REC, of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Since the nomination of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Sir Etekamba Umoren as the new INEC Commissioner from Akwa Ibom State, people have argued that Elder Ikoiwak had set a precedence as a member of PDP appointed from the State.

But refuting the allegation, Ikoiwak told newsmen in Uyo that he had in his 10 years of being a REC conducted elections in various states where four different political parties won at gubernatorial level, adding that no resident electoral commissioner dead or alive has achieved such a feat.

The chairman said this was a product of his resolve to remain focused and diligent in the course of duty and his refusal to be compromised irrespective of who was involved.

“When I was in Bauchi, the ANPP won against a sitting PDP government totally, in Edo, the ACN won against the PDP, in Imo APGA defeated the sitting PDP government, then the PDP won in Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa states.

“So when people say I am a member of a particular political party, I tell them you are not correct if you want to tag a political party on me, don’t tag one party because if it is assumed that when you conduct elections and a party wins it automatically means you are a member of that party then I should be a member of APGA,PDP,ACN,ANPP.”

Ikoiwak narrated how his resolve to be fair to all made him deploy several antics when he deployed to Imo State to reject inducements from different political parties inorder for him to compromise.

“I was deployed to go to Imo State to conduct a supplementary election, before I even arrived, those politicians running for election had started looking for me.When I arrived I booked three hotels , I checked-in to one, dropped my bag at the other and slept in another.

“A day to the election a friend called in from Eket and asked where I was, I told him I was in Owerri, Imo State.
He told me he was around in Owerri, and I gave him my location. Surprisingly, he appeared in my hotel with two other men, I left them there and went out through the inner room to another hotel.

“After trying unsuccessfully to reach me, one of the governorship candidates told people that I must have collected such a very heavy bribe from his opponent and that was why I refused to even listen to their offer.

“I ignored their allegations and went on to do my business, which was to ensure a credible poll. In the end, he won the election.” He said.

Politicians the chairman said won’t come to you if they notice that you always follow due process and uphold integrity.

” It was in that same election that the politician questioned my integrity yet won the election with a wide margin against his opponent.

“They brought a new phone with a newly registered sim card and asked to speak to me, I declined, I’m sure he must have felt I had given in to the highest bidder but he finally won the election.

“My annoyance was that he doubted my integrity, he concluded that more money was given to me by his opponent.” He added.

Ikoiwak, while chiding politicians who engage in bribery also faulted voters who engage in selling their votes to politicians and reiterated the need for reformation of the mind, stating that it would continue to breed under performance from politicians after they win the election.

On the just concluded general elections, Ikoiwak had this to say.

“I feel that the expectations of Nigerians were so high. It’s just like having a child who previously scores 40 percent assuring you of 100 percent but ends up scoring 70 percent that’s a pass.

” The promise of the Commission was so high that when it didn’t happen people where disappointed.
“However, it is the first time Nigerians actually elected people in government as we actually saw our names in our polling units, we voted and our votes reflected.” He added.

As measures towards actualising an accountable and effective government, the chairman harped on the need for electoral officers to firmly uphold integrity and transparency while conducting elections.

Ikoiwak, said that he was able to succeed because he was always involved in the electoral processes which include distribution of materials as well as taking charge and ensuring other officials are working in tandem with laid down rules and making replacements where necessary.

” I have had instances where I had to change an Electoral officer with Assistant Electoral officer, if I perceive that they are not competent enough this has helped me block loopholes.” He said.

The Federal Government on Friday said plans are underway to conduct headcounts of Almajiris in the country and enroll them into the homegrown school feeding programme by the present administration.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Schools Feeding, Dr. Yetunde Adeniji, revealed this during a courtesy call on the Executive Governor of Nasarawa state, Abdullahi A. Sule in Lafia.

A statement by Special Assistant to the SSA, Mr. Oyedokun Oyewumi indicated that the program targets children in public schools, adding that her office is open to suggestions.

She said her interactions with relevant authorities demonstrates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare and educational opportunities for children through the school feeding program, with a focus on incorporating marginalized groups, such as the Almajiris.

Speaking during the visit, Governor Abdullahi A. Sule called on the Federal government to make it a priority to include Almajiris in the home-grown school feeding plan.

He recognized the efforts of the Senior Special Assistant to bring about reforms that would ensure the success of the schools feeding program.

Governor Sule appealed to the SSA, to provide an improved livelihood for the almajiris, adding that this will eradicate child destitution and remove beggars from the streets.

Governor Sule said, “the incorporation of the Almajiri, a group of traditionally itinerant Islamic students, into the program would help in taking them off the streets and provide them with proper nutrition and education”.

The Governor assured Dr. Adeniji of Nasarawa State Government’s support in achieving the objectives of the program.

“We call on the Office of the SSA to, in collaboration with Northern States, relevant institutions, conduct a census of Almajiri schools and headcount of the destitute children with the view to enrolling them in the ongoing National Home-grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP)”, he said

Earlier in the week, the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani commended the Senior Special Assistant on her proactive methods in getting familiar with institutions and states that will add to the success of the programme.

He equally said that the Kaduna state government would partner with the SSA’s office to ensure success of the programme when it begins, with a view to improve the nutrition value of the children.
