  • Saudi Arabia Cancels Visa on Arrival for 264 Nigerians, Prompting Diplomatic Inquiry

Saudi Arabia Cancels Visa on Arrival for 264 Nigerians, Prompting Diplomatic Inquiry

    By Milcah Tanimu

In a surprising turn of events, Saudi Arabia has revoked the visa on arrival for 264 Nigerian passengers who arrived in the country aboard Air Peace from Kano. The Saudi Arabian authorities insisted that the passengers be returned to Nigeria, creating a ripple effect in Nigeria’s aviation and diplomatic circles.

The cancellation occurred as President Bola Tinubu participated in the Arab-Africa summits in Saudi Arabia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement, indicating that they are investigating the matter to determine if any consular or aviation rules were violated. The ministry affirmed its commitment to mitigating actions that could impact the welfare of Nigerian citizens in the future, aligning with President Tinubu’s 4-Ds strategy.

While the Presidency acknowledged the situation, it stated that it was awaiting more information on the matter. The flight, originating from Lagos and transiting through Kano, had arrived in Jeddah without incident, but upon landing, Saudi authorities unexpectedly canceled all passengers’ visas.

Speculation arises whether this move is a strategy to discourage Air Peace from operating to the destination, especially given the airline’s high load factor since commencing operations. The Nigerian embassy in Jeddah intervened, leading to a reduction in the number of passengers slated for return from 264 to 170.

Stakeholders in the aviation sector see this development as aeropolitics, suggesting that it aims to force the Nigerian carrier out of the route. They emphasize the need for immediate intervention by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, advocating for strong government support for designated Nigerian carriers operating internationally.

Industry expert Group Captain John Ojikutu emphasizes the importance of designating Nigerian airlines as flag carriers and urges the government to stand firmly behind Air Peace to uphold its rights as per the Bilateral Air Service Agreement with Saudi Arabia. The situation highlights the complexities of international aviation and the need for diplomatic efforts to resolve such issues.

  • Federal Government Warns of Contempt Charge as Labour Persists with Strike Plans

Federal Government Warns of Contempt Charge as Labour Persists with Strike Plans

    By Milcah Tanimu

In a contentious development, the Federal Government has issued a stern warning to the organised Labour, urging them to halt their scheduled strike set to commence today. This plea comes in light of a restraining order issued by the National Industrial Court, Abuja, on Friday, which the government contends must be adhered to.

The strike, announced by TUC President Festus Osifo, is a response to the alleged assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero by suspected thugs in Imo State on November 1. However, the NIC, through Justice Benedict Kanyip, has prohibited the labour centres and their affiliates from embarking on any form of strike, based on an ex-parte application submitted by the Federal Government.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, emphasized the gravity of violating the court order, cautioning that such actions could result in contempt charges. Kamarudeen Ogundele, the Special Assistant to the AGF on Communication and Publicity, stressed the importance of respecting the rule of law and allowing the court to adjudicate on the matter.

Despite the warnings, Osifo declared that all NLC and TUC affiliates were mobilized for the strike, potentially disrupting economic activities nationwide. The impetus for the strike revolves around the brutalization of NLC President Ajaero in Imo State, with the unions demanding the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

The unions, undeterred by the court order, have written to their members, directing them to withdraw their services. Affiliates, including the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, have pledged to participate in the nationwide strike as instructed by the NLC.

In response to the strike, the Director-General of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, emphasized the importance of obeying court orders and encouraged dissatisfied members of the labour movement to address their concerns through appropriate channels.

As the situation escalates, various state police commands have expressed readiness to maintain peace and order during the strike. The Federal Government, represented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accused the Organised Labour of pursuing an agenda detrimental to the well-being of Nigerians, questioning the legitimacy of the strike in defiance of a court order.

  • Policy Alert insists on illegal loan, budgeting allegations against AKSG

Policy Alert insists on illegal loan, budgeting allegations against AKSG

Policy Alert, a Civil Society Organisation working on fiscal and ecological justice in the Niger Delta has said that it would continue to stand on its reports of duplication of projects by Akwa Ibom government in it’s supplementary budget

Recall that the organization had earlier accused the administration of Governor Umo Eno of obtaining a loan of N1.2bn, budgeted for 90 Jeeps and 90 pickup trucks in its 2023 supplementary budget, and also budgeted for some already inaugurated projects.

But the Governor had in a reaction last week dismissed the reports as frivolous, insisting that his administration had neither obtained a loan of N1.2bn nor budgeted for 90 Jeeps and 90 pickup trucks as reported by the civil society group.

But in a statement signed by the organisation’s Programme Officer, Fiscal Reforms and Anti-Corruption, Faith Paulinus made available to newsmen on Monday, Policy Alert said the information it provided to the public was true and simply based on government documents.

“We wish to draw the attention of the public to the fact that they can find the information on the loan received by the State Government during third quarter of 2023 in Page 11 of the 2023 Third Quarter Budget Performance Report published by the Akwa Ibom State Budget Office on the website at https://www.aksbudgetoffice.ak.gov.ng/budget.html.

“The 90 Jeeps and 90 pickup trucks budgeted for the office of the SSG can also be found on page 197 of the Akwa Ibom State 2023 Supplementary Budget which is downloadable from the same website.

“We also have incontrovertible proof that the projects we flagged in the 2023 supplementary budget had either been completed, inaugurated, or fully funded by previous administrations. We await the state government’s proofs to the contrary”

“It is very disturbing and potentially undermines government credibility that state functionaries are denying information published in the state government’s official documents.

“The least we expected from the state government was an explanation as to why these projects required supplementation after they had been completed, inaugurated, or the public had been led to belief so.

“Such an explanation remains a supply-side duty that the government owes to citizens in a democratic setting, as opposed to the churlish defensiveness that we have witnessed in the last few days.” The statement said.

It said that by bringing to the public the details of the controversial provisions including already inaugurated projects, the organisation was offering the government the opportunity to engage citizens and explain why those provisions were necessary, adding that the government should not miss such an opportunity for constructive engagement.

“Just a decade or so ago, discussing the budget was almost a taboo in Akwa Ibom and some other states in the Niger Delta. We are proud of our contributions over the years towards changing that narrative.

“We are also proud of how much our advocacy has contributed towards making Akwa Ibom State a more open, trusted and attractive destination to donors and investors. Today, fiscal documents are routinely available online and we are happy that the current administration has continued to publish these documents.

“But it would be counter-productive to publish fiscal data on the one hand while on the other hand being intolerant of citizens’ efforts to utilize such data in asking questions and demanding accountability.” The statement concluded.

  • MTN Contemplates Exit from Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea-Conakry

MTN Contemplates Exit from Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea-Conakry

MTN, the prominent African telecommunications company, is reportedly considering withdrawing from three markets on the continent, as indicated by a report from Business Insider Africa. The mobile operator, which currently operates in 19 countries across Africa and the Middle East, has initiated discussions about the potential “orderly exit” from its operations in Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, and Liberia.

While the specific reasons for the contemplated exit have not been disclosed, MTN’s financial reports highlight multiple challenges faced in the West and Central Africa region. CEO Ralph Mupita cited signs of inflation and currency devaluation in various markets. The company’s 2022 financial year-end report revealed a 1.7 percentage point decline in the EBITDA margin to 33.1%, attributed to pricing pressures, fintech channel subsidies, and macroeconomic challenges, including local currency devaluations and increased inflation.

According to Bloomberg, these three countries contribute only 1.6% to MTN’s total revenue in 2022, making them relatively minor contributors. MTN holds a substantial market share in Guinea-Bissau and Guinea-Conakry, accounting for approximately 30%, while in Liberia, Lonestar MTN is the second-largest telecom provider in the country.

  • Aisha Yesufu Warns of Looming Protest, Anticipates Potential Outcry Surpassing EndSARS Movement

Aisha Yesufu Warns of Looming Protest, Anticipates Potential Outcry Surpassing EndSARS Movement

    By Milcah Tanimu

Renowned socio-political activist, Aisha Yesufu, has voiced concern over the frustration caused by corrupt politicians in Nigeria, predicting that it could trigger another nationwide protest. Yesufu highlighted the mounting discontent among Nigerians, suggesting that the anger simmering within the populace might fuel a protest even more intense than the 2020 ‘EndSARS’ movement.

In 2020, citizens across Nigeria rallied to demand the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a notorious police unit known for its brutal treatment of young people. The movement, initiated on Twitter (now X), escalated into widespread demonstrations in major cities, accompanied by incidents of violence. The protest culminated in tragic events, including the loss of lives, particularly when military forces opened fire on peaceful demonstrators at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos.

Yesufu, co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls campaign and a prominent figure in the EndSARS protests, cautioned that another demonstration might take the nation by surprise. Via her X account, she expressed, “Nobody saw the #EndSARS protest coming. Nobody will see the next uprising coming. Sadly, it might end up being violent. There is simmering anger fueled by the impunity and brazenness of the corrupt politicians and rulers, who have rigged their way into power. Nobody will be spared.”
