10 Factors Affecting Unhealthy Heart Function, According to Cardiologist

Dr. Henry Onwualu, a cardiologist from the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, has identified 10 key factors contributing to unhealthy heart function and urged the public to prioritize heart health through preventive measures and lifestyle modifications. He shared these insights during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Friday.

1. Body Weight:
Onwualu highlighted that both underweight and overweight conditions can strain the heart. He stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) to reduce heart disease risk.
“Abdominal obesity also affects the heart,” he explained, recommending that females keep their waist circumference below 88 cm and males below 102 cm.

2. High Blood Pressure:
High blood pressure forces the heart to work harder, leading to overexertion. Dr. Onwualu advised reducing salt intake to manage blood pressure effectively.

3. Diabetes:
Diabetes is another factor that increases the risk of heart disease. Proper management of blood sugar levels is crucial to maintaining heart health.

4. High Cholesterol:
Elevated cholesterol levels can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, restricting blood flow and overworking the heart.

5. Aging:
While aging is unavoidable, it naturally leads to a decline in heart performance. Onwualu noted that as the heart ages, its efficiency decreases, potentially leading to heart issues.

6. Excessive Alcohol Consumption:
The cardiologist warned against alcohol consumption, emphasizing that it’s not beneficial for the heart. “Though some studies suggest small amounts of alcohol may be beneficial, quantifying this is difficult, so it’s better to avoid alcohol altogether,” he advised.

7. Smoking:
Smoking harms the blood vessels, forcing the heart to work harder to pump blood. It also increases the risk of heart disease due to the blockages it causes in the arteries.

8. Lack of Exercise:
Physical inactivity weakens the heart muscles. Onwualu recommended following World Health Organization guidelines, which suggest at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise (like brisk walking) or 15 minutes of vigorous activity (such as running) daily.

9. Family History of Heart Disease:
Those with a family history of heart disease are at a higher risk of developing heart problems. Onwualu stressed the importance of regular heart screenings for such individuals.

10. Stress:
Chronic stress can overwork the heart, leading to fatigue and reduced functionality. “Plan your time, avoid unnecessary stress, and ensure adequate rest,” he advised.

Dr. Onwualu concluded by recommending regular health check-ups for monitoring blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol levels, along with prescribed medications where necessary. He emphasized the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to minimize heart disease risks.
