10 Killed, 3 Injured in August Farmers-Herders Clash in Oyo – NEMA

Ten people were killed, and three others were injured during a clash between farmers and herdsmen in the Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State last August, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

NEMA disclosed the details to journalists after conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the affected community, Gbenpakan, located in Saki West Local Government Area, on Tuesday.

The South West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr. Kadiri Olanrewaju, reported, “The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South West Zonal Office, Ibadan, in collaboration with the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA), conducted an on-the-spot assessment on September 10, 2024, of the impact of the farmers-herders clash in Gbenpakan community, Saki West Local Government Area of Oyo State.”

Olanrewaju stated that upon arrival, the assessment team, led by him, paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Saki West LGA, Hon. Gbenga Akinola. Akinola provided an overview of the conflict, attributing it to tensions over the use of agricultural land, with farmers accusing herders of encroaching on their farmland for grazing.

The clash resulted in the loss of 10 lives, while three others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

Olanrewaju expressed his sympathy to the affected community and urged both farmers and herders to live peacefully, advising them to avoid further attacks.
