By Israel Adamu, Jos

A mining site collapse in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State has claimed the lives of 13 people, confirmed Dr. Joshua Riti, Chairman of the LGA, to newsmen in Jos yesterday.

Expressing sorrow over the tragic incident, Riti revealed that the mining site, located at the boundaries of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs, had been a source of livelihood for local youth. Seven of the deceased reportedly hailed from Bassa LGA.

“This is an unfortunate incident; these young people were out seeking a means of livelihood,” Riti said. “They were working hard to meet the challenges of the current economic hardship, but sadly, they met their untimely death. My deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”

Our correspondent learned that most of the victims were young adults aged between 18 and 30 years.
