2023: Experts identify reasons for unstable growth in nation’s democratic space

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Experts have revealed that the continuous marginalisation of women in Nigeria political space is detrimental to its efforts in growing a stable democratic nation.

The views was expressed at a one day sensitisation and enlightenment meeting to encourage women contesting for elective position in the 2023 general elections in Kaduna.

Recalled that National Assembly had earlier rejected the Affirmative Action in the constitutional amendment of the Electoral Act 2022.
Few among the gender bills rejected by the parliament were the affirmative action bill to ensure 35 per cent positions for women, the bill on ministerial or commissioners’ nomination as well as the reserved seat bill to create additional seats for women at the National and States Assemblies.

Speakers at the sensitisation meeting of women contestants in the 2023 elections, therefore noted that women in position of leadership across the globe have shown competence, hence any nation that fails to recognise their capacity is doomed to fail.

“The women believe that they have the number to change the narrative, and therefore advised women contesting in the 2023 elections to be courageous.

“The surest way for women to succeed in the 2023 general elections” according to these women contestants is when they support each other”.
