The Kano State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, recorded significant legislative milestones in the 2025 fiscal year, reaffirming its commitment to good governance, accountability, and improved service delivery across the state.
The 10th Assembly, made up of 40 lawmakers representing the state’s local government constituencies, remained vibrant and proactive throughout the year. The House leadership—comprising the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Majority and Minority Leaders, Whips, and the Clerk—played strategic roles in legislative coordination and administration.
Legislative Achievements
Between January and December 2025, the Assembly adopted over 700 motions and passed 15 bills aimed at strengthening institutions and enhancing the welfare of Kano residents. Key legislations included the Kano State Geographical Information System Bill, Kano State Centre for Disease Control Bill, Kano State Signage and Advertisement Agency Bill, Kano State Electricity Bill, Kano State Security Bill, Kano State Censorship Board Amendment Bill, Kano State Forensic Laboratory Bill, Kano State Social Protection Bill, Motor Vehicle Administration Bill, the proposed Kano State Electricity Agency Establishment Bill, and the Kano State Neighbourhood Security Corps Law 2025.
The Assembly also considered motions of urgent public importance, including calls for the revival of the Tailoring and Garment Training Centre in Falgore, Doguwa Local Government Area; urgent action to address insecurity in Tsanyawa and Bagwai LGAs; intervention for victims of the Shuwaki Market fire in Gwarzo LGA; and support for communities affected by a devastating windstorm in Kiru LGA.
Other resolutions focused on upgrading the Takai NYSC Clinic, rehabilitating rural roads, improving primary healthcare centres, and reviewing the 2025 Nigeria Customs Service recruitment exercise.
Oversight and Committee Activities
Standing committees carried out extensive oversight functions to ensure transparency and accountability. Committees covering Appropriation, Works and Transport, Agriculture, Water Resources, Women Affairs, Education, Health, Higher Education, Finance, Public Accounts, Public Petitions, Local Government, Land and Physical Planning, Environment, Commerce, Judiciary, Security, Information, Religious Matters, Hajj, SUBEB, Project Monitoring, Ethics and Privileges, Rules and Business, Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, Community Reorientation, Emergency, Housing, Pension, Sports, and the MDGs conducted visits to ministries, departments, agencies, and constituencies to monitor effective implementation of the 2025 budget and government policies.
Renovation of Assembly Complex
With the support of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Assembly initiated the renovation of the Assembly Complex, which had fallen into disrepair. The project has reached over 75 per cent completion and is expected to be inaugurated in early 2026.
Retreats and Special Engagements
In 2025, the Assembly organised a legislative retreat themed “The Role of the State Legislature in the Review of the Constitution and Effective Oversight Functions of MDAs.” Development partners, including Katchima, PHCN, and LISDEL, also engaged lawmakers on issues relating to the reduction of maternal mortality.
During the year, the Assembly suspended a local council chairman over the diversion and misappropriation of fertiliser, raised concerns over child trafficking, screened and confirmed commissioner nominees Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu and Abdulkarim Rabiu Maude, SAN, and approved a supplementary budget of ₦215.37 billion.
The House also reaffirmed its commitment to reducing road crashes through collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps. Speaker Falgore commended media organisations such as Nasara, Hikima, Premier, Ammasco, Radio Kano, and several online platforms for their role in shaping public understanding of legislative processes.
Losses and Condolences
Despite its achievements, the year was marked by the loss of two prominent lawmakers: the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Alhaji Aminu Sa’adu Ungogo, and the Chairman of the Committee on Hajj Affairs, Alhaji Sarki Aliyu Daneji. Ungogo passed away shortly after participating in the 2026 budget public hearing.
The Assembly extended heartfelt condolences to their families, constituencies, the Kano State Government, and the people of the state. It also joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the deaths of philanthropist Aminu Alhassan Dantata, former President Muhammadu Buhari, members of the Kano contingent at the National Sports Festival, Alhaji Abbass Sunusi, Alhaji Haruna Danzago, and victims of the Edo State killings, describing their loss as deeply painful and irreplaceable.
