5 Foods to Avoid After Typhoid Fever

The food you eat plays a crucial role in your recovery process after typhoid fever. Typhoid is caused by *Salmonella Typhi*, a bacteria transmitted through contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include high fever, stomach pain, weakness, and loss of appetite. Even after recovery, your digestive system remains sensitive, so your diet needs careful attention to avoid setbacks. Here are five foods to avoid to help your healing process:

1. Spicy Foods
If you enjoy spicy food, you’ll need to hold off while recovering from typhoid fever. Spices such as chilli, pepper, and hot sauces can irritate your already weakened digestive system, leading to discomfort, bloating, or even diarrhoea. Stick to mild, non-spicy meals until your stomach has regained strength.

2. Fried Foods
Fried foods, including fries, doughnuts, and fried chicken, contain unhealthy fats that can be difficult for your sensitive digestive system to process. These foods can cause indigestion and delay recovery. Instead, opt for baked, steamed, or boiled foods, which are gentler on your stomach and help retain more nutrients.

3. High-Fiber Foods
While fibre is normally beneficial for digestion, it can be too much for a stomach recovering from typhoid. Foods high in fibre, such as raw vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, can cause gas and bloating. To avoid stressing your digestive system, choose low-fibre options like cooked vegetables, peeled fruits, and refined grains.

4. Dairy Products
Post-typhoid, some individuals develop temporary lactose intolerance, making it harder to digest dairy products like milk, cheese, and cream. These can lead to bloating, gas, and diarrhoea. Non-dairy alternatives, such as almond or oat milk, are easier to digest and can provide necessary nutrients during recovery.

5. Processed Foods
Processed foods, including packaged snacks, canned goods, and frozen meals, often contain preservatives, artificial ingredients, and high amounts of salt and sugar. These offer little nutritional value and can strain your digestive system. Stick to fresh, whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins to nourish your body and support your recovery.

By avoiding these foods and choosing more gentle, nutrient-rich options, you’ll give your digestive system the support it needs to heal effectively after typhoid fever.
