5 killed as gunmen raid Benue community

Five people have been killed by suspected gunmen at Pevya community, a town in Katsina Ala area of Benue State.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday when some hoodlums invaded a pub in the community in a tinted vehicle and opened fire on the fun-seekers, leading to the death of five people and leaving many injured.

A source in Katsina Ala town who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the gunmen were members of the late Terwase Akwaza’s (aka Gana) gang.

He said, “An incident happened at a community called Pevya which is a border town to Taraba but it’s in Katsina Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.

“A member of vigilance Community Guards, Oliver, was shot by bandits at Pevya alongside four others. We leant that the man had been a target of the bandits for some time because they believed he was an informant to security men in the area.

“On Wednesday, which happened to be a market day, some bandits numbering five who were gang members of the late Terwase Akwaza aka Gana came in a tinted vehicle and trailed him to a joint where he was with other people.

“It was a market day and the bandits on sighting him opened fire on him and others at the drinking joint and succeeded in killing him and four others. Several people were injured and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Contacted, the spokesperson for the state police, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the killing.

In a text message to our correspondent, Anene wrote, “Incident is confirmed but the victims have yet to be identified please.’’
