A’Ibom: CP warns against violent protests

By Odo Ogenyi, Uyo

The Police authorities in Akwa Ibom has said that it would not tolerate violent protests of any kind within the state especially with the Biennal Police games ongoing in the state.

A statement signed by State Police Public Relations Officer, Macdon Odiko in Uyo on Sunday, said the warning followed receipt by the state Police Commissioner Olatoye Durosinmi of a report of an intended protest by some persons in Uyo.

The statement warned that while the command would not be against any peaceful protests, it would not tolerate any violent protest that could threaten the ongoing police games and undermine the peaceful reputation of the state.

“While the CP is not against peaceful protest, the CP notes, that violent protest of any kind will not be tolerated within the State, especially at this time when the 13th Biennial Police Games is ongoing in Uyo.

“The Commissioner of Police further noted that Akwa Ibom State is a peace brand and a tourist attraction, and hence, should be protected rather than portrayed in negative light.” It said.

The statement advised those intending to carry out any protest to reconsider and desist forthwith as available information revealed that it could lead to violent clashes.

“However, the Command will not hesitate to apprehend and prosecute perpetrators of any form of violent protest in any part of the state.” It concluded.
