Nigerian Telecommunication Consumers Spent N3.3 Trillion on Communication Services in 2022, NCC Report Unveils

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has published a report indicating that Nigerians and other consumers of telecommunication services within Nigeria collectively spent N3.3 trillion on calls, data usage, SMS, and other telecom services during 2022.

According to the NCC’s 2022 Subscriber/Network Data Annual Report, telecom companies operating in Nigeria amassed a total revenue of N3.33 trillion for the year.

The report highlights that the number of active subscribers surged from 195,463,898 subscriptions in 2021 to 222,571,568 active voice subscriptions by December 2022, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 13.86 percent.

The report attributes the rise in subscriber numbers to factors such as customer loyalty, promotional campaigns, seasonal effects, robust consumer acquisition efforts, and competitive product offerings across all network providers.

Additionally, the growth in active subscriptions had a positive influence on related telecom metrics such as teledensity, Internet penetration, and broadband penetration.

Data consumption exhibited a substantial uptrend in 2022, soaring by 46.77 percent to reach 518,381.78 terabytes by the year’s end.

“At the close of December 2022, the volume of data used by subscribers increased significantly compared to December 2021. Data consumption by subscribers grew to 518,381.78 terabytes from 353,118.89 terabytes in December 2021, representing a remarkable 46.77 percent increase in data consumption for the period.”

The findings underscore the persistent demand for telecommunication services in Nigeria, showcasing the industry’s dynamism and the evolving communication needs of the populace.
