AFCON Qualifier: Onyekuru sends signals to Bafana Bafana

By Afolabi James

Super Eagles striker Henry Onyekuru is inform for Nigeria’s next Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa this weekend.

Onyekuru who made Gernot Rohr’s list following injuries to top striker Odion Ighalo scored twice for Galatasaray in their 3-0 win over ten man Kayserispor.

Placed on standby in the initial list released by coach of the Nigerian team Gernot Rohr, he was added to the main squad after injury ruled out top striker Odion Ighalo from the games against South Africa in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers and the friendly against Uganda.

Onyekuru enhanced his chance of getting game time in both games for Nigeria owing to his brace which helped his team to a 3-0 win. His goals came in the 18th and 75th minute of play and his excessive celebration after the second goal earned him a booking as he took off his jersey out of excitement.

Omer Bayram rounded up what ended as a comprehensive win for the Turkish giants with a third goal two minutes ‎from regulation time and five minutes after Kayserispor were reduced to ten men following the sending off of Tiago Lopez.

For Onyekuru the brace took his tally for the season to three goals in ten games in what is his second loan spell since signing for Everton in 2017. He spent last season on loan at Anderlecht and scored nine goals in the league before an injury in December brought his season to a premature end.
