NLC Commences Two-Day Warning Strike Amidst Government Meeting Dispute

By  Milcah  Tanimu

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has initiated a two-day warning strike in response to the ongoing hardships in the country, which it attributes to the removal of the fuel subsidy. The strike comes after the NLC declined a meeting with the Federal Government regarding the situation.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, expressed concern that the strike would worsen the plight of ordinary Nigerians and called on the NLC to reconsider its actions.

The NLC had previously given notice of a two-day warning strike to protest the widespread suffering and impoverishment experienced across the country. They threatened to escalate to a total and indefinite shutdown of the economy within 14 working days or 21 days following the warning strike if the government failed to address the hardships faced by citizens.

However, sources within the NLC leadership indicated that the strike would proceed despite a scheduled meeting with Minister Simon Lalong. The decision to skip the meeting reportedly stemmed from the minister’s earlier media briefing, in which he criticized and threatened labor leaders.

Despite the absence of the NLC at the meeting, the Federal Government expressed its readiness to negotiate and address the issues raised by the labor unions.

The strike has sparked a contentious debate over the economic impact and potential consequences for the Nigerian population, with both sides standing firm on their positions.
