**”DSS Establishes Directorate of Public Relations and Strategic Communications; Appoints Peter Afunanya as Director”**

In a bid to enhance public engagement and strengthen democratic governance, transparency, and accountability, the Department of State Services (DSS) has established a new Directorate of Public Relations and Strategic Communications (DPRSC). The supervising Director of this newly formed directorate is Peter Afunanya, the former Public Relations Officer, who will be responsible for overseeing the agency’s public communications.

This appointment officially took effect on September 26, 2023. The DSS has applauded its Director General, Alhaji Yusuf Magaji Bichi, for his vision in expanding the agency’s capabilities and entrusting Peter Afunanya with the leadership of the Directorate.

Peter Afunanya brings a wealth of experience to his new role, boasting over two decades of expertise across various domains. His extensive background includes intelligence analysis, threat assessment, security administration, VIP protection, investigation, counterterrorism, open-source intelligence management, background checks, security vetting, surveillance, security sector governance, democratic accountability in law enforcement, educational research, peace advocacy, alternative dispute resolution, development communication, interagency cooperation, joint operations, teaching, public and media relations, reputation management, strategic communication, protocol, diplomatic affairs, writing, public speaking, and stakeholder engagement, among others.

Afunanya’s educational achievements include a Ph.D. in Security and Strategic Studies from Nasarawa State University, Keffi (2019), a Master’s degree in Peace and Strategic Studies from the University of Ilorin, Kwara State (2011), and a Master of Arts degree in English Language from the University of Uyo (2009). His academic journey commenced with a Second Class Upper Division in English Language from Abia State University, Uturu, in 1997. His outstanding contributions have earned him several accolades, including the President’s NYSC National Honours Award for Outstanding Performance (1998/1999) and the Edo State NYSC Meritorious Honours Award (1998/99).

Throughout his career at the DSS, which began in 1999, Afunanya has undertaken numerous leadership and management courses, executive intelligence management training, countering violent extremism programs, and tradecraft training at the Service’s training institutions. Additionally, he has received international training in diverse areas, such as innovation and strategy at Harvard University (USA), web investigation at City University (London), security management and coordination at ARC London, and international conflict and counterterrorism at various international locations.

Afunanya has held various positions within the DSS, spanning its headquarters, commands, and formations. His most recent role was as the Public Relations Officer. He has also contributed to national governance as a member of the Board of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Sub-Committee of the Presidential Transition Council. Currently, he serves as a member of the Strategic Communication Inter-Agency Policy and Coordination Committee (SC/IPCC) within the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

His professional affiliations include fellowship status with the Security Institute (FSI) and memberships in renowned organizations like the Society for Peace Scholars and Practice (SPSP), Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NiCarb), Institute of Chartered Administration of Nigeria, Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN), Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), and Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
