NCC CEO Dr. Aminu Maida Urges Quality Service and Industry Collaboration in Telecom

In a decisive address to chief executive officers within the Nigerian telecommunications sector, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), underscored the non-negotiable importance of maintaining an excellent quality of service in the industry. Speaking at an interactive session in Lagos on Thursday, Dr. Maida urged industry leaders to prioritize collaboration to ensure the delivery of superior telecom services.

During the session, which coincided with his confirmation as the substantive CEO of the Commission at the Senate Chambers, Dr. Maida emphasized the pivotal role of the telecom sector as a key enabler of Nigeria’s digital economy. Acknowledging the high expectations of telecom consumers, he stressed the need for the industry to come together and deliver value to customers, likening telecom services to essential utilities such as water and electricity.

Dr. Maida also addressed the crucial aspect of compliance with industry regulations and standards, expressing a commitment to urgent and proactive measures. “Compliance is an area where we are going to be placing a lot more focus. I am not going to be asking for compliance after the fact,” he asserted, emphasizing the industry’s responsibility to set benchmarks for excellence.

Discussing the pressing issue of broadband, Dr. Maida acknowledged the progress made with Infrastructure Company (InfraCo) licensing but highlighted the need to re-imagine and increase investment in broadband expansion. He urged a collaborative effort to address challenges and opportunities in the sector, particularly at the state level.

Recognizing operating entities as a crucial segment of national telecom development, Dr. Maida emphasized the importance of direct communication with industry CEOs to understand their concerns and perspectives. He urged CEOs to view their role not only as representatives of shareholders but also as contributors to the progress of Nigeria.

In response, industry CEOs expressed delight at Dr. Maida’s consultative approach, pledging their support for his mandate. President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Tony Emoekpere, commended the CEO for initiating the interactive session, while Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), praised the promising approach of the new NCC boss.

The telecom industry in Nigeria is poised for a renewed focus on collaboration, compliance, and quality of service under Dr. Aminu Maida’s leadership.
