Freed Kaduna Journalist Recounts Harsh Prison Conditions

Must read

Kaduna journalist, Mr. Gabriel Achadu Idibia, who recently regained freedom from Kaduna correctional centre, revealed shocking details of his ordeal. Idibia, Head of Bureau, Northern Operation for ‘Daybreak’ Nigeria newspapers, disclosed that he was fed with Stone Beans and debris during his time in prison, raising concerns about the conditions within the facility.

Idibia, remanded over an investigative news report on the poor 2023 Hajj exercise by the Muslim pilgrims welfare agency, described the beans served in the prison cell as containing red, black, and white stones, making it nearly impossible to consume without discomfort. He expressed disbelief that such food could be prepared for inmates, questioning the humanity of those responsible.

The journalist further highlighted the lack of essential amenities during his remand, stating that he wasn’t provided with a mattress, blanket, or mosquito net until his release. Idibia noted sleepless nights due to fear of mosquito bites and revealed that he had to rely on colleagues’ remnants for food.

Idibia recounted the experience of being questioned about payment for amenities by fellow inmates in the special class cell, where he was placed without having paid the mandatory sum of N40,000. He described the hardships faced by inmates, emphasizing the need to endure hunger.

Additionally, he shared the plight of a 14-year-old boy selling water, imprisoned over unscrupulous allegations. Efforts to obtain the boy’s name were thwarted as he was closely monitored within the prison.

Despite the challenges, Idibia commended the inmates for their patience and cleanliness, while urging prison officers to attend to the health needs of sick inmates. The journalist’s revelations shed light on the difficult conditions within the Kaduna correctional centre.
