AFCON Final: Lagos issues health advisory ahead of Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire clash

The Lagos State Ministry of Health has released a health advisory for all residents in anticipation of the African Cup of Nations final match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Cote d’Ivoire’s Elephants on Sunday.

Following reports of five Nigerian deaths during the intense semifinal match between the Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in Bouaké, the Ministry emphasized the importance of prioritizing health and well-being while enjoying football matches or engaging in any strenuous activities.

In a statement issued by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, on Saturday, the following tips were outlined:

– Know Your Limits: Understand your physical capabilities and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any underlying health conditions before participating in activities that could strain them.

– Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Avoid crowded, poorly ventilated, and hot environments, maintain good hydration by drinking plenty of water, and eat nutritious foods to sustain energy levels during prolonged periods of sitting and watching the game.

– Take Regular Breaks: Prevent stiffness and promote circulation by periodically standing up, stretching, and moving around, which can also help combat fatigue.

– Maintain Good Posture: Sit comfortably with proper back support to reduce muscle strain and spinal stress.

– Stay Calm and Relaxed: Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing to manage stress and emotions during intense game moments.

– Be Prepared for Emergencies: Familiarize yourself with medical facilities and emergency exits at the venue, and promptly seek medical assistance if needed by contacting the Lagos Emergency Medical Team, LASAMBUS, at 767 or 112 toll-free line.

Additionally, the commissioner urged viewing centers to ensure the availability of adequate medical facilities and trained personnel to respond promptly to emergencies.

Residents were advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any unusual symptoms or discomfort during the match.
