From Millionaire to “Zeronaire”: Bash Ali’s Reflects on 68th Birthday

Bashiru Lawrence Ali, also known as Bash Ali, the former World Boxing Federation Cruiserweight Champion, marked his 68th birthday with a poignant reflection on his journey, transitioning from wealth to near destitution due to his unwavering stance against corruption.

In a heartfelt Facebook post on Tuesday, Ali recounted his 17-year struggle to host his Guinness World Record Boxing Championship Fight in Nigeria, emphasizing his refusal to compromise on integrity despite facing numerous challenges.

Ali disclosed the toll his principled stand had taken on his finances, revealing a drastic decline from millionaire status in dollars to virtually nothing in Naira over the years.

During this period, Ali endured physical injuries, including hospital admissions, as well as multiple detentions, including a 43-day stint at Kuje Prison, all stemming from his advocacy against corruption in sports and Nigeria as a whole.

Despite lucrative offers to take his fight abroad, Ali remained steadfast in his determination to realize his dream within Nigeria, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his country.

As he celebrates his birthday, Ali remains resolute in his pursuit, vowing to continue fighting until the age of 70, with aspirations to retire comfortably and eventually become the President of Nigeria, marking his unwavering dedication to his ultimate goal.

Ali expressed gratitude to his supporters, acknowledging their steadfast presence throughout his journey, concluding with a resounding declaration of appreciation and determination: “Happy birthday The Great Bash Ali.”
