Ghana Marks 67th Independence Day Anniversary

Today, March 6, 2024, Ghana commemorates 67 years since attaining independence from British colonial rule, as reported by the Ghana News Agency.

After enduring 83 years of British colonial dominance, Ghana achieved independence, blazing a trail as the first sub-Saharan African nation to break free from British colonialism.

The inaugural President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, hailed Ghana’s liberation from colonial rule as a significant milestone in the nation’s history.

Each year on March 6, celebrations unfold nationwide and among Ghanaian communities abroad, featuring a variety of activities that span the entire month.

This year’s national anniversary festivities will be hosted at the Youth Resource Centre in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region.

In 2017, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo introduced a rotational system for the national independence celebration to showcase different regions and stimulate local economies.

Following the Central Region in 2022 and the Volta Region in 2023, the Eastern Region becomes the third region to host the national anniversary celebration.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Our Democracy, Our Pride.”

The event will be graced by the presence of President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire as the Special Guest of Honour.

An estimated 120 ambassadors and high commissioners from various countries, along with Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament and the 275 Members of Parliament, are expected to attend. The festivities will feature a parade involving security services, students, pupils, and various groups and institutions.
