FG to Hold Talks with SSANU, NASU Today Over Salary Withholding Dispute

Must read

The Federal Government is set to hold a meeting with the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) on Wednesday, The Press has learned.

According to a message from the National President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim, the meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.

“They invited us for a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday),” Ibrahim said in a brief message to our correspondent.

SSANU and NASU initiated a nationwide seven-day strike on Monday to protest the Federal Government’s decision to withhold their four-month salaries from 2021 due to their previous strike action.

During the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the salaries were withheld under the principle of ‘No work; no pay’.

However, the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, directed the release of the withheld salaries for members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who were also affected by the previous administration’s policy.

SSANU and NASU expressed dissatisfaction with being excluded from the release of their salaries.

They appealed to the Tinubu government to release their withheld salaries as well, but their requests were not met.

Subsequently, the two unions commenced a strike after their demands were repeatedly ignored by the government.

The warning strike, which began on Monday and is set to last for seven days, has led to the suspension of academic activities on university campuses nationwide.
