Nathaniel Bassey Seeks Police Intervention Amid Defamation Allegations

Renowned gospel artist Nathaniel Bassey has taken legal action by petitioning the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, urging an investigation and possible charges against four individuals for defamation.

The controversy arose when certain netizens alleged a resemblance between the child of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo and Nathaniel Bassey, sparking a wave of online debate and speculation.

On April 1, 2024, Nathaniel Bassey’s legal team, comprised of attorneys Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia, formally submitted the petition to the IGP.

In the petition, Bassey’s lawyers highlighted the false claims made by four social media users—Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and Dj Spoiltkid—regarding Bassey’s alleged paternity.

The attorneys emphasized Bassey’s significant impact as a gospel music minister, stressing the need for prompt action to address the damaging allegations and restore his reputation.

The petition underscored Bassey’s global influence through his music ministry, urging the authorities to swiftly investigate the matter and take appropriate legal measures against those responsible for spreading false information.

The move by Nathaniel Bassey reflects his commitment to upholding his reputation and protecting his integrity against unfounded allegations propagated on social media platforms.
