The Alliance for Justice, Advocacy, and Humanitarian Foundation (AHAJF), a non-governmental organization, has expressed concern about the high number of innocent people incarcerated in Nigerian and African prisons.
The Foundation stated that many innocent individuals are currently imprisoned without understanding the reasons for their detention. The group is committed to seeking justice for these individuals and ensuring their release.
During an advocacy visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at its Dr. Sam Egwu Press Centre in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, AHAJF President Dr. Martins Itumoh emphasized the need for collaboration with organizations like the NUJ to secure justice for those unjustly imprisoned.
He also pledged that the association would work to address irregularities within the country’s prison system, pointing out that the proportion of innocent people in prison is significantly higher in Africa compared to other regions.
The group aims to offer support to those unjustly incarcerated and seeks partnerships with other organizations to advocate on behalf of those who lack a voice.
AHAJF’s Director of Operations, Monday Eze, also expressed concern about the alleged extortion and arbitrary charges imposed on residents of Ebonyi State by some agencies for services that should be free.
The Foundation has written to the state government seeking partnership to hold these agencies accountable and ensure fair treatment of the state’s residents.
