NANS Plans Nationwide Protest Against Fuel Scarcity and Electricity Tariff Hike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced its intention to stage a nationwide protest on May 7, 2024, in response to the ongoing fuel scarcity and electricity crisis gripping the nation.

In a statement released by the Senate President of the organization, Akinteye Babatunde, NANS expressed deep concern over the government’s failure to address the challenges plaguing the power sector.

“Our decision to mobilize for a nationwide protest stems from the severe hardships inflicted on Nigerian students by the prevailing fuel scarcity and electricity crisis,” the statement read.

The students outlined their primary objective as demanding the removal of key officials whom they hold responsible for exacerbating these issues.

“We are calling for the immediate removal of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Bayo Adelabu, the Minister for Power. It is evident to us that their leadership has contributed to the mismanagement and mishandling of vital energy resources, plunging the nation into turmoil,” NANS asserted.

To ensure widespread participation and amplify their message, NANS strategically organized the protest to take place across various zones of the country.

“The protest will be held at designated locations in different zones as follows: Zone A: Abuja Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway; Zone C: Airport Road in Abuja; Zone D: Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; Zone F: Onitsha-Asaba Head Bridge; Zone E: Wuntin Dada along the Bauchi-Jos Road on Tuesday, May 7th, 2024,” the statement outlined.

NANS emphasized that the protest represents a collective stand against systemic failures and neglect perpetuating hardship and suffering among the populace.

“We firmly believe that the removal of Mele Kyari and Honorable Adelabu is crucial to addressing the root causes of fuel scarcity and the electricity crisis. We demand accountability, transparency, and decisive action from the government to alleviate the plight of Nigerian students,” NANS declared.

The organization urged all Nigerians to join them in the protest and stand united in the fight for a brighter future for all.
