Major General Duru Is Alive and Well, Confirms Police

By Milcah Tanimu

The Imo State Police Command has clarified its stance regarding the confessional statements made by three suspects arrested in connection with the alleged kidnapping and killing of Retired Major General Richard Duru.

The incident, which occurred on September 27, 2023, along Bishops Court in Area 7 Orji/Uratta Owerri, involved the abduction of the retired general and the theft of his black Mercedes Benz G.L. 450 by a suspected kidnapping syndicate.

In a press release signed by the Command’s spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, the police refuted the suspects’ claims, emphasizing that Major General Duru is alive. The police are actively working to rescue him and apprehend the abductors.

Commissioner of Police CP Aboki Danjuma has established a special unit to investigate the case. Significant progress has been made using the suspects’ confessional statements and technical intelligence. A press briefing on May 16, 2024, provided the public with an update on the investigation.

The three suspects claimed affiliation with the Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), confessing to the kidnapping and supposed murder of the retired general. However, these allegations have not been confirmed, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Imo State Police Command urges the public, especially the victim’s family, to remain hopeful and disregard the suspects’ confessions. The investigation team, led by Commissioner of Police CP Aboki Danjuma, is committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.

The Command reassures the public that every effort is being made to ensure the safety and well-being of Retired Major General Richard Duru.
