NYSC: Okowa says skills acquisition, a practical means to tackle unemployment

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has described the skills acquisition development training of Corps members during the orientation course as a practical means to tackle and subdue the perennial unemployment problem in the country.

Governor Okowa stated this at the closing ceremony of NYSC 2018 Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 Orientation course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation camp, Issele-Uku in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Okowa, represented at the ceremony by the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Engr. Jude Sinebe advised corps members that the programme was to enable them acquire practical skill to achieve financial independence as well as create employment for others.

He however urged them to continue to develop themselves in whatever skill of their choice even as they leave camp, by getting themselves registered with a skill centre for their post camp training in order to improve their proficiency.

The governor who declared the 2018 Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 Orientation Course formerly closed urged corps members to keep the zeal and commitment that saw them through the orientation camp, tasking them not to allow any challenge to make them lose focus.

According to Okowa, “The spirit of perseverance, patriotism and industry which you have acquired through this orientation, is necessary ingredient for personal success in this one year and even beyond the service year”.

While saying that the service year is a road one passes once in a lifetime, the governor called for deep commitment that would spur corps members to leave a mark behind through the personal community development service projects.

On the forthcoming 2019 general elections in the country, Okowa charged corps members to display all-round patriotism, honesty and diligence when called to the national duty.

Earlier, the Delta State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Omotade Benjamin called on the traditional rulers, opinion and community leaders to see corps members as their own children and integrate them into their various communities as they leave the confines of the camp to their respective communities.

Mr. Omotade equally, charged corps employers to provide them with suitable trainings and welfare that would make them fit in perfectly at work environment.

“The NYSC Scheme has been able to build bridges across all divides in this country. Please join us to consolidate on these efforts by ensuring that the corps members are safe and well protected in your domains. Let us all do our best to provide them with a peaceful and enabling environment which will spur them to optimal performance and productivity”, NYSC Delta Coordinator noted.

He advised corps members to avoid all forms of unnecessary journeys and frivolous adventures, adding ” leave positive lasting legacies wherever you find yourself. Serve honestly and faithfully in your places of primary assignment and tackle difficulties and challenges in a disciplined manner”.
