Borno Police Warn Against Nationwide Protest, Cite Ongoing State of Emergency

The Borno State Police Command has issued a warning to residents against participating in the planned nationwide protest, citing the ongoing state of emergency due to insecurity in the state.

In a press statement released on Thursday, signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Nahum Daso on behalf of Commissioner of Police Yusufu Mohammed, the police emphasized that the state of emergency in Borno prohibits any form of public protests or mass gatherings.

The statement noted that some “disgruntled unpatriotic individuals” are attempting to mobilize youths for a mass protest tagged #EndbadgovernmentinNigeria2024 through social media and other channels. While acknowledging the right to peaceful assembly, the police cautioned that such protests are often susceptible to being hijacked by individuals with malicious intent.

“The general public should note that Borno State is still under a state of emergency, and therefore, the ban on any form of public procession in the state remains in effect,” the statement read. The police assured that they are working with other security agencies to prevent any acts of lawlessness.

The statement further warned organizers and sponsors to abandon their plans, stating that efforts are ongoing to protect lives and property. It described any attempts to disrupt the state’s relative peace or damage critical infrastructure as acts of terrorism. The Commissioner of Police also urged parents and guardians to caution their wards against participating in the protest and advised the public to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities.

The nationwide protest is scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024. The Federal Government, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and the military have also cautioned against the protest.
