Northwest Governors Unveil Security and Development Plan

By Milcah Tanimu

In a major move to tackle developmental and security issues in the North West Zone, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State opened the Policymakers Technical Session on the North West Peace and Security Development Framework.

The Kaduna meeting was convened to review the findings from the Inaugural North West Peace and Security Summit and to craft a strategic roadmap to address the region’s pressing challenges.

Governor Uba Sani underscored the importance of a collaborative approach to enhance regional stability, economic growth, and social progress. He highlighted that the framework aims to address the underlying causes of conflict and insecurity in the region.

Key proposals from Governor Sani include establishing a North West Theater Command, extending the Multinational Joint Task Force to cover international borders, and implementing socioeconomic interventions. Additional strategies involve creating Standing Security Committees, developing non-kinetic programs for deradicalization and transitional justice, and launching a campaign for ethical reorientation.

The Governor also called for greater unity and mobilization among residents to tackle the region’s challenges. He advocated for increased support for security forces, improved localized intelligence, investment in agriculture and rural infrastructure, expanded access to education and healthcare, and fostering a sense of inclusion among citizens.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was praised for its commitment to the goals set by the North West Governors’ Forum and the UNDP during the Katsina summit.

The Policymakers Technical Session marks a crucial step towards restoring peace and security in the North West Zone. With the concerted efforts of regional stakeholders, the plan aims to overcome developmental and security hurdles, paving the way for stability and prosperity.
