Tinubu Pledges Non-Interference in Anti-Corruption Agencies’ Operations

By Milcah Tanimu

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to combating corruption in Nigeria by ensuring sufficient funding for anti-corruption agencies while maintaining a hands-off approach in their operations. Speaking on Monday, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, addressed the 6th Annual General Assembly of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa in Abuja.

In his remarks, Tinubu highlighted corruption as a major impediment to national progress, undermining public trust and equitable resource distribution. He emphasized that addressing corruption requires collective effort and resolute action from leaders.

“We have made a deliberate effort over the past year to strengthen Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies by not interfering in their operations and providing them with the necessary funding,” Tinubu said. “Corruption is a profound challenge that affects the fabric of our societies, and it is crucial for us to confront it with unwavering commitment.”

As ECOWAS Chairman, Tinubu also called on member states to harmonize legal frameworks, enhance the autonomy of anti-corruption institutions, and adopt effective strategies to combat corruption. He advocated for improved cross-border cooperation in investigations, the use of innovative technologies for detection, transparency in public procurement, and active engagement with civil society and media.

“Let us move beyond mere rhetoric and focus on concrete actions,” Tinubu urged. “We must close loopholes exploited by corrupt individuals, enhance our national institutions’ independence and capacity, and promote transparency and accountability in all sectors.”
