Afam Osigwe has been officially sworn in as the 32nd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) during a ceremony held in Lagos. Osigwe, who was elected in July 2023, took the oath of office on Thursday, succeeding Yakubu Maikyau, whose term has just ended.

Previously serving as the General Secretary of the NBA, Osigwe won the presidential election by securing 50.52% of the votes, defeating two other candidates. He received a total of 20,435 votes, outpacing Tobenna Erojikwe, who received 10,998 votes (27.19%), and Chukwuka Ikwuazom (SAN), who garnered 9,018 votes (22.29%). The results were announced by Oluseun Abimbola, Chairman of the NBA’s Electoral Committee.

In his inaugural address, Osigwe highlighted his commitment to maintaining the NBA’s role as a significant force in Nigeria’s democratic landscape. “Under my leadership, the Nigerian Bar Association will remain vigilant in holding both federal and state governments accountable. We will ensure the rule of law is upheld and the rights of Nigerians are protected,” he stated.

Osigwe also expressed his appreciation to NBA members for their trust in him, saying, “I am deeply honored by this responsibility, and I pledge to work tirelessly to advance the interests of our members and the broader Nigerian society.”
