Toronto Police Arrest Canada-Based Nigerian Woman for Death Threats

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Toronto police have apprehended Amaka Sunnberger, a Nigerian woman, following her issuance of death threats against Nigerians of Yoruba and Benin descent in a viral video. Sunnberger was arrested on Sunday, September 1, 2024, and is set to appear in court on Monday, September 2, 2024.

According to a police statement, Sunnberger has been charged with making threats and will face the Ontario Court of Justice at 2201 Finch Avenue West, in courtroom 107, at 10:00 a.m. The case is being investigated as a possible hate-motivated offense.

The video featuring Sunnberger’s threatening remarks triggered widespread outrage across Nigeria. The Nigerian House of Representatives has called for her prosecution, urging the Canadian government to address the threats, which were deemed incitements to violence and genocide against the Yoruba and Benin communities.

Additionally, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has petitioned Honourable Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton, Canada, to take action in response to the case.
