Bill Gates Explains Why Nigeria Receives Largest Share of Foundation’s Funds in Africa

Bill Gates, Co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has shed light on why Nigeria receives the most significant portion of the foundation’s intervention funds across Africa. Speaking during an interview with selected journalists at the 2024 NutriVision Dialogue in Abuja, Gates explained the rationale behind this allocation.

“We invest heavily in Asia, but our largest investments are in Africa, with Nigeria receiving the most funding,” Gates stated. He attributed this to Nigeria’s large population and significant needs, noting that the foundation has invested billions in the country.

Gates expressed satisfaction with the progress made in reducing child mortality in Nigeria but emphasized that more work is needed. He highlighted the foundation’s commitment to reducing global health disparities and eradicating diseases such as measles, malaria, and polio.

Looking ahead, Gates revealed that the foundation plans to increase its spending, particularly in enhancing primary healthcare. “Our focus is on primary healthcare because the impact per dollar spent is significantly higher,” he said.

In addition to healthcare, Gates emphasized the foundation’s substantial investments in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. He pointed out that increasing agricultural productivity is vital for Nigeria’s economic growth, which can be achieved through access to high-yield, climate-resistant seeds, fertilizers, and improved weather forecasting for farmers.

Gates also discussed the foundation’s efforts to support food fortification, aiming to improve the nutritional quality of staple foods and reduce malnutrition. He stressed the importance of access to affordable, nutritious foods like milk and eggs in combating malnutrition.

Since its establishment in 2000, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has partnered with regional institutions, national governments, and local communities across 49 African countries to advance health and development.
