Falconets Fall 3-1 to Germany in Colombia 2024 Under-20 World Cup

By  MILCAH TANIMU

Two-time runners-up Nigeria’s under-20 women’s football team, the Falconets, suffered a 3-1 defeat against Germany in their second Group D match at the 2024 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. The match took place at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota.

The German team, now leading the group with six points from two matches, outpaced the Nigerian side, who are currently in second place with three points after their opening win against South Korea.

Germany took an early lead in the 17th minute with a goal from Sehitler Alara, exploiting a defensive lapse by the Falconets. Despite a strong second-half performance from Nigeria, including an equalizer from Chiamaka Okwuchukwu in the 50th minute, Germany quickly regained the lead. Sofie Zdebel scored in the 61st minute, and Sarah Ernst added a third goal, securing the win for the Germans.

The Falconets also had a goal disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), and their attempts to level the score were thwarted by Germany’s solid defense.

Germany’s victory maintains their perfect record in the group stage, while Nigeria now faces a challenging path to the Round of 16. The Falconets must secure a strong performance in their final group match against Venezuela to advance to the knockout stages.

The outcome of Nigeria’s final match will be influenced by the result of the game between Korea Republic and Venezuela. The Falconets will need a decisive win to improve their chances of progressing in the tournament.
