$1.5 Billion Fund to Accelerate LPG Adoption in Africa

By  Milcah  Tanimu

The Global LPG Partnership (GLPGP) and the African Refiners Distributors Association (ARDA) have announced a groundbreaking $1.5 billion fund to advance clean cooking initiatives across Africa. This significant investment aims to promote LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) as a primary cooking fuel, addressing the continent’s reliance on biomass.

Objectives of the $1.5 Billion Fund

– Infrastructure Development: Building facilities for LPG distribution.
– Expansion of Distribution Networks: Increasing LPG accessibility across the continent.
– Consumer Education: Educating communities on sustainable cooking practices.

With around 900 million people in Africa lacking access to clean cooking technologies, this fund aims to improve energy security and health outcomes by reducing dependence on traditional biomass.

Global Support for Clean Cooking Solutions

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has highlighted 2024 as the year for achieving universal access to clean cooking. At a recent summit in Paris, $2.2 billion was mobilized from public and private sectors, covering half of Africa’s financial needs for clean cooking solutions, including LPG.

Nigeria-Saudi Arabia Partnership

Nigeria and Saudi Arabia are working together on the National Human Capacity Training Program for LPG adoption. Led by Saudi Arabia’s Oil and Sustainability Program in partnership with Nigeria’s Ministry of Petroleum Resources, this initiative focuses on developing micro-distribution points and training local communities to increase LPG availability and reduce health risks.

Cameroon’s LPG Expansion

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is supporting Cameroonian energy retailer BOCOM Petroleum with a €50 million financing package. This investment will fund the expansion of LPG infrastructure in rural areas of Cameroon, aiming to replace biomass with cleaner energy alternatives.

African Development Bank’s Commitment

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has pledged $2 billion over the next decade to promote clean cooking solutions, including LPG, gas-to-power, and biogas. This commitment, equating to an annual investment of $200 million, targets achieving universal access to clean cooking by 2030.

The Transformative Potential of LPG

“LPG stands to revolutionize Africa’s energy sector by offering cost-effective and reliable energy to millions. The continent’s heavy reliance on biomass has led to energy security issues and health concerns. LPG provides a practical solution to these challenges,” says NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.
