Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has revealed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering signing the peace accord ahead of the Edo governorship election scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Following a closed-door meeting with the PDP caucus in Edo State, Obaseki expressed confidence in the security and fairness of the election, attributing this to assurances from the Inspector General of Police (IG) and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a social media statement, Obaseki said, “As a party, we are ready for the election, and confident the people will choose our candidates, who stand head and shoulders above the others.”

The governor also indicated that the PDP’s decision to sign the peace accord, initiated by the National Peace Committee led by former Military President Abdulsalami Abubakar, is being reconsidered. Earlier, the PDP had refused to sign, citing the arrest of its supporters in the lead-up to the election.

Obaseki emphasized the party’s hopes that detained members would be released or granted bail with the courts resuming.
