Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has expressed concerns that the 2027 general elections may not take place, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC) of dismantling democracy in Nigeria.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his Media Adviser, Ike Abonyi, Secondus alleged that the APC is deliberately driving Nigeria into chaos through poor governance. His comments were in response to the recent governorship election in Edo State.
Secondus criticized the election, describing it as an “electoral fraud” conducted without respect for the rule of law or voters’ rights. He suggested that the APC is on a mission to destroy democracy in Nigeria.
“The results of recent off-cycle elections in Imo, Kogi, and Edo States show that the Independent National Electoral Commission, led by Mahmoud Yakubu, has learned nothing from the flawed 2023 elections, which damaged Nigeria’s democratic reputation,” the statement read.
Secondus further expressed alarm at the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje’s, statement that the “Edo template” would be applied in upcoming elections in Ondo and Anambra. He argued this indicates the ruling party’s intent to create a one-party state by suppressing opposition.
“The strength of democracy lies in opposing voices that hold the ruling party accountable, but the APC is set on silencing dissent and misgoverning Nigeria,” Secondus said.
He warned that Nigeria’s democracy is on the brink due to widespread election rigging, and if the results in Edo stand, it will be difficult to hold credible future elections in the country. Secondus also condemned the harassment of opposition leaders and the involvement of security agencies and electoral officials in manipulating the Edo election, stating that the world is watching Nigeria’s declining democratic process.
