NASIEC Announces November 2nd Date for Local Government Elections in Nasarawa

By Leo Zwànke, Lafia

The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) has set November 2, 2024, as the new date for local government elections in the state. This announcement follows a legal victory that cleared the path for the long-awaited polls.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the Democracy House in Lafia, NASIEC Chairman Barr. Ayuba Wandai Usman reiterated the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections.

“We are pleased to inform you that after a thorough review of the judgment from the Federal High Court in Lafia, the commission has decided to hold the 2024 Local Government Councils Elections on November 2, 2024,” Usman stated.

The decision comes after NASIEC faced an originating summons from a group of plaintiffs challenging specific provisions of the Nasarawa State Local Government Election Law, 2018, and the 2024 Local Government Councils Election Guidelines. However, the Federal High Court dismissed the suit, allowing the commission to proceed with its plans. The plaintiffs initially filed an appeal but later withdrew their case.

Barr. Usman expressed gratitude for IPAC’s unwavering support, highlighting their role as critical stakeholders in the state’s democracy. “Your continued belief in our ability as impartial umpires has been a source of joy and has motivated us to enhance our efforts in ensuring credible and effective election strategies,” he said.

He also commended IPAC for its role in maintaining peace throughout the election process. “The Inter-Party Advisory Council has exhibited maturity and exemplified decorum in its affairs, creating a conducive environment for all stakeholders to participate in the election process without hindrance,” Usman added.

It is noteworthy that NASIEC had previously announced the elections for August 31, 2024. However, due to the ongoing court case, all scheduled activities were postponed indefinitely.

The chairman reassured the council that NASIEC is committed to adhering to all legal provisions governing the conduct of elections. He expressed optimism that, with IPAC’s continued support, the upcoming elections would be successful.

Current local government officials, who were sworn in on October 8, 2021, are expected to complete their tenure on October 7, 2024. NASIEC’s timely actions will ensure a smooth transition in accordance with the law.

Barr. Usman concluded, “We are confident that with the support of IPAC and all relevant stakeholders, we will fulfill our statutory mandate to ensure credible elections in Nasarawa State.”
