AMMC arrests 16 suspected persons for vandalizing Street light infrastructure in Abuja

By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council ,AMMC, Coordinator , Chief Felix Obuah has revealed that within one week, at least sixteen suspected people involved in vandalizing streetlights and other infrastructure in the Territory have been arrested.

Chief Obuah gave this hint while briefing Journalists on the development in Abuja during a parade of some suspects.

According to the Coordinator, on Thursday alone, five suspects were arrested, with two others evading capture.

He emphasized the importance of public vigilance and media collaboration, adding that, Security is everyone’s responsibility.

“We’ve enlisted the support of local vigilantes and hunters, which led to today’s arrests.”

He warned that any individuals involved in vandalizing government property, including both vandals and buyers, would face legal action.

The AMMC’s intensified efforts come amid rising concerns about damage to new solar-powered streetlights, which were recently installed to improve public safety and visibility at night.

Furthermore, a contractor for the solar installation Aderemi Rashid, lamented that some equipment was stolen despite anti-theft measures in place.

“The equipment used suggests a level of sophistication beyond ordinary miscreants, there’s a possible involvement of well-equipped perpetrators, Rashid noted.

In an earlier arrest, AMMC Coordinator revealed that an expatriate contractor had been handed over to the police after being caught dismantling streetlight components.

Obuah accused the contractor who would soon be charged to court of damaging infrastructure as a ploy to secure future repair contracts.

The AMMC has vowed a continuous clampdown on vandals and urged residents to report any suspicious activities related to public property vandalism.
