Wike Justifies War Against Beggars, Claims They Could Be Terrorists’ Informants

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has defended his recent crackdown on beggars in Abuja, citing security concerns. Wike, who declared a “war on beggars” in October, faced criticism for his actions, with opponents citing poverty as a reason for the rise in begging. However, in a live media session on Wednesday, Wike emphasized the security risks posed by beggars, suggesting that some could be informants for terrorists.

The former Rivers State Governor pointed out that security threats in the nation’s capital should not be blamed solely on poverty. He argued that some individuals could disguise themselves as beggars to gather information on residents’ movements, potentially aiding criminal activities. Wike’s comments were made as he addressed concerns over the impact of begging on Abuja’s security situation.
