The Federal Ministry of Environment (FME), led by Malam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has reaffirmed its dedication to driving Nigeria’s transition to a sustainable green economy in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

This commitment was underscored during a two-day stakeholders’ workshop on capacity building and strengthening linkages with climate change research centers.

A communiqué titled “Strengthening Climate Change Action in Nigeria” from the FME’s Department of Climate Change outlined five key resolutions from the workshop:

  1. Promoting Synergy: Strengthening collaboration among research institutions, stakeholders, and Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to enhance data availability and ease of sharing.
  2. Digital Transformation: Transitioning from manual to digitalized data management to boost efficiency in climate change research.
  3. Education and Advocacy: Developing comprehensive advocacy programs, empowering youth, and leveraging digital platforms to raise climate awareness and promote community-based adaptation strategies.
  4. Low-Carbon Development: Operationalizing the National GHG Inventory Management System and aligning research with government policies to reduce emissions.
  5. Climate Adaptation: Enhancing research, policy advocacy, community engagement, and funding mobilization to improve resilience against climate impacts.

The communiqué emphasized the workshop as a platform to explore innovative solutions for Nigeria’s climate challenges and foster collaboration with centers like WASCAL (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use).

“Together, we aim to achieve a sustainable future for generations to come,” the communiqué stated, adding hashtags such as #ClimateAction, #GreenNigeria, #RenewedHope, and #SustainableDevelopment to rally support.

This initiative underscores the ministry’s proactive approach in positioning Nigeria for a resilient and environmentally sustainable future.
