By Isreal Adamu, Jos

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has called off its seven-day nationwide warning strike, citing significant progress in negotiations with the Federal Government.

This announcement was made via a communiqué issued in Jos at the end of an extraordinary virtual National Executive Council (NEC) meeting. The meeting reviewed the strike and the efforts made toward resolving lingering issues between MDCAN and the government.

Key Resolutions and Commendations:

  1. Strike Suspension:
The communiqué, jointly signed by MDCAN President Prof. Aminu Mohammed and Secretary Prof. Daiyabu Ibrahim, confirmed the immediate suspension of the strike. The association pledged to honor the agreements reached during reconciliation meetings led by the Minister of Labour and Employment.
  2. Acknowledgment of Efforts:
MDCAN expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s commitment, particularly the Ministries of Health, Social Welfare, Education, Labour, and Productivity. They also noted the intervention of the National Assembly and other stakeholders in advancing the resolution process.
  3. Presidential Intervention:
The association praised President Bola Tinubu for his decisive actions in resolving critical issues, including the ongoing crisis at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka. The President recently dissolved the university’s governing council and dismissed its Vice Chancellor and Registrar for alleged breaches of due process.
  4. Renewed Hope Agenda:
MDCAN reiterated its commitment to partnering with the government, particularly in implementing the “Renewed Hope” Health and Education Agenda of the current administration.
  5. Appreciation for Media and Public Support:
The association commended Nigerians, especially the media, for their role in objectively reporting the issues and promoting peaceful resolutions.

Background on UNIZIK Crisis:
The Federal Government dissolved the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University following allegations of the illegal appointment of an unqualified Vice Chancellor. According to a statement by Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga, the council disregarded the institution’s regulations in its selection process, prompting the government’s intervention.

MDCAN’s leadership emphasized their commitment to service delivery and urged all parties to adhere to agreed timelines for resolving outstanding matters.
