Court Halts EFCC’s Arraignment of Ex-Kogi Governor Bello Over Lawyer Absence

By  Milcah   Tanimu

The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed the arraignment of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, charged with alleged involvement in an N80.2 billion fraud. Justice Emeka Nwite ruled against proceeding in the absence of Bello’s legal counsel, emphasizing the need for fair hearing.

Although EFCC counsel Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, argued that Bello’s physical presence sufficed for the arraignment, the judge disagreed. He noted the defendant’s lawyers were unaware of the Friday hearing and deferred proceedings to December 13. The court also ordered Bello to remain in EFCC custody until then.

The case underscores the judiciary’s emphasis on ensuring fair legal representation, even in high-profile corruption trials.
