In response to the rising cases of bullying in primary and secondary schools across Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Education has announced plans to introduce a platform for anonymous reporting of bullying incidents.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, expressing concern over the prevalence of bullying, violence, and other vices in schools.
Alausa highlighted the adverse effects of bullying, noting that it contributes to declining academic performance, mental health challenges, school dropouts, and the erosion of moral values among students.
He referenced several high-profile cases, including the tragic death of Sylvester Oromoni, a student allegedly bullied at a private school in Lagos, and the recent suspension of 13 students from the Federal Government College, Enugu, for bullying a fellow student in November 2024.
“To address these challenges, the Federal Ministry of Education has launched several initiatives, including a National Campaign Against School Violence. This campaign aims to educate students, teachers, and parents on the dangers of bullying and violence,” Alausa stated.
Key Measures to Combat Bullying
The minister outlined the government’s strategies to curb bullying and violence in schools:
– Partnerships with Security Agencies: The ministry is collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to combat cultism and other criminal activities in schools.
– Anonymous Reporting Platform: A dedicated helpline and online platform will be established to allow students and parents to report cases of bullying anonymously, ensuring confidentiality and swift action.
– Awareness Campaigns: The National Campaign Against School Violence aims to sensitize school communities about the harmful impacts of bullying and violence.
Call to Action
Dr. Alausa appealed to stakeholders, including parents, teachers, students, and the media, to collaborate in creating a safe and conducive learning environment:
– For Parents: Monitor children’s behavior and mental well-being closely.
– For Teachers and School Authorities: Foster a safe and inclusive environment and respond promptly to reported cases of bullying or violence.
– For Students: Reject bullying, violence, and cultism, and report any incidents to trusted adults.
– For the Media: Raise awareness about the dangers of bullying and the importance of moral education.
“We must all work together to ensure that our schools are havens for learning and development, free from the fear of bullying or violence,” Alausa emphasized.
The new measures reflect the government’s commitment to tackling the issue comprehensively and safeguarding the welfare of students nationwide.
