NTI Trains 222 Teachers on Digital Pedagogy, E-Learning, Climate Literacy

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

The National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Kaduna, has commenced a nationwide training program for basic school teachers, focusing on digital pedagogy, remote teaching, e-learning, climate literacy, and green life skills.

The five-day workshop, which began on Wednesday, is being held concurrently in Kaduna and Lagos. Teachers from 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are participating in the program, themed “Digital Pedagogy, Remote Learning, E-Learning, Climate Literacy, and Green Life Skills.”

Organized in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the initiative aims to equip educators with modern teaching methodologies to address the evolving demands of education.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, NTI’s first female Director-General, Prof. Sadiya Sani-Daura, described the workshops as a significant step towards advancing teacher education and strengthening the foundation of basic education in Nigeria.

She stated, “NTI, in collaboration with UBEC, has consistently championed innovative strategies to provide teachers with the skills and knowledge needed to meet the demands of modern education.”

Highlighting the workshop’s objectives, Sani-Daura noted the importance of digital pedagogy and remote teaching, particularly in today’s technology-driven education environment.

She said, “Teachers must be empowered with the tools and skills to effectively utilize digital platforms, enhance instruction, engage learners, and promote critical thinking. This training bridges the gap between traditional teaching methods and emerging educational technologies, preparing teachers to excel in the digital age.”

On the theme of climate literacy and green life skills, Sani-Daura emphasized the critical role educators play in fostering environmental sustainability. She added, “Teachers are instrumental in shaping attitudes and behaviors that support sustainable practices, a responsibility that goes beyond academics.”

In his welcome address, Dr. Bature Salisu, Special Technical Assistant to the director-general, underscored the collaboration between NTI and UBEC as a shared commitment to advancing teacher education.

He said, “This initiative demonstrates NTI’s unwavering dedication to enhancing teachers’ professional capacities and addressing contemporary educational challenges. The training equips educators with innovative methodologies and critical skills needed to prepare students for the 21st century.”

The acting Registrar of NTI, Mrs. Zainab Aliyu, described the workshop’s theme as timely, urging teachers to embrace creativity and innovation in leveraging technology.

Participants at the Kaduna center were drawn from northern states and the FCT, while those at the Lagos center represent southern states.
